Bozeman Creative Learning Center is Hiring an Elementary Assistant Teacher Near Bozeman, MT

We are looking for someone interested in being a part of an intimate classroom community! There is the opportunity for growth into a lead teacher role, and considerable autonomy in this position. The position can be full time, but there is the flexibility this position to be part time around 30 hours/week.

Position Overview:

The role of the Elementary Assistant Teacher (Teacher) is to guide Kindergarten through 5th grade students in a prepared educational environment. Pulling from various pedagogies, the Teacher is expected to support a classroom that meets the unique developmental needs of each student. Working collaboratively with the teaching team, the Teacher is expected to support the educational and developmental goals for each child.

Position Responsibilities:

Key tasks are listed below. This is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities and the Teacher is encouraged to speak with the administration should there be a need for clarification of expectations.

  • Support a prepared work environment that meets the developmental needs of the children you are serving.
  • Support in the enforcement of the annual classroom constitution, which speaks to classroom expectations for students and others in our community.
  • Support in the delivery of a curriculum that meets the developmental needs of each student.
  • Support the adherence to a weekly classroom schedule that ensures all aspects of the curriculum are being met through individual, small group, and whole group lessons.
  • Communicate classroom needs to the administration in an effort to identify budget priorities.
  • Attend parent/teacher conferences to provide parents with updates on each student's progress.
  • Support the execution of frequent field trips, guest speakers, outdoor education, and hands-on activities to allow for deeper understanding of curriculum content.
  • Attend and participate enthusiastically in staff meetings. Share ideas on upcoming events, classroom needs, and school culture.

Key Position Competencies:

  • Interpersonal Communication - The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, and co-workers through individual conversations, small group lessons or meetings, and group presentations to maintain open communication and further each child’s educational goals.
  • Knowledge and mastery of the English language. Knowledge of how to utilize technology for effective communication.
  • Skilled in active listening, reading comprehension, instruction, and understanding how others are feeling when engaging in conversation both verbally and through text.
  • Able to communicate thoughts and ideas verbally and through writing. Ability to come up with clever ideas or creative ways to communicate an idea or topic. Ability to effectively share information to ensure retention of information.
  • Communicating with supervisors, peers, students, or parents. Interpreting the meaning or importance of information for others.
  • Problem Solving - The employee must be able to identify problems as they arise, and work to find solutions to problems before they grow with both parents, students, and co-workers.
  • Knowledge of customer service best practices to address customer (parent or child) concerns.
  • Skilled at critical thinking for quick problem solving. Skilled at identifying appropriate learning strategies to teach new concepts or ideas. Skillful at monitoring performance of self and others for continuous changes and adjustments. Skilled at judgement and decision making when address a variety of situations. Skilled at negotiation and persuasion to reconcile differences and find common ground.
  • Able to use deductive reasoning to problems for solutions that make sense. Foresight and awareness of problems as they arise to be able to address issues proactively. Able to shift between multiple tasks as necessary to meet the shifting needs of the classroom and students. Ability to interpret multiple thoughts, opinions, or experiences to resolve classroom issues.
  • Resolving conflict and negotiating with others when faced with complaints, student disputes, etc.
  • Organizational Skills - Ability to maintain an orderly classroom, organized student records, and maintain a classroom schedule.
  • Knowledge of general record keeping best practices. Knowledge of programs used for electronic record keeping.
  • Skilled at managing their time effectively. Skilled at analyzing a system or process to make adjustments to efficiently meet the needs of the classroom.
  • Ability to combine multiple subjects and content to deliver a curriculum that meets various standards in a project-based model. Able to order various goals logically for optimal results.
  • Organizing, planning, and prioritizing work to meet the curriculum goals. Documenting and recording information in a way that is understandable for others.

Work Environment:

Bozeman Creative Learning Center is a small school community operating out of a repurposed office space. Employees are encouraged to speak openly, honestly, and respectfully with one another to model appropriate interactions for students.

Most work hours are spent indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. However, employees should come to work each day prepared to spend time outdoors for recess and outdoor education. This position requires frequent kneeling, sitting on the floor, squatting and bending.

There may be frequent field trips and outings outside of the school which may change the environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in, knowledge of, or passion for non-traditional education environments.

Experience in a alternative education environment.
