Detroit Country Day School is Hiring an Upper School English Teacher Near Beverly, MI
- Provide innovative, comprehensive, student-centered and content-rich instruction designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills within the context of a largely canonical curriculum
- Plan and prepare lessons in order to deliver the curriculum and ensure breadth and balance in all subjects
- Individualize writing instruction with emphasis on language, rhetoric, and structure
- Employ a range of teaching strategies and support students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways
- Create and manage a caring, supportive, purposeful, and stimulating environment which is conducive to student’s learning
- Identify clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenge and high expectations
- Nurture an inclusive environment in which all students can participate fully and have a sense of belonging
- Organize and manage groups or individual pupils reflecting all abilities, ensuring differentiation of learning needs
- Plan opportunities to develop students’ social, emotional, and cultural awareness
- Maintain a regular system of monitoring, assessment, record-keeping, and reporting of student’s progress
- Contribute to the development and coordination of the department’s curriculum
- Communicate and consult with parents over all aspects of their children’s education – academic, social, and emotional
- Recognize health and safety are responsibilities of every employee, take responsible care of self and others, and comply with the school health and safety policies and any specific procedures/rules that might apply to this position
- Bachelor degree in English; advanced degree preferred
- Experience teaching literature, reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar to 9th-12th grade students, including American Literature
- Must be willing to engage in school life beyond the classroom: Preference to candidates with coaching experience or have journalism experience and a willingness to help advise the school newspaper.
- Proficient and enthusiastic user of technology
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Professional collegiality, a desire to grow, and enthusiasm for young people
