Job Title: Histotechnologist

Work Location: Onsite,Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda MD.

Security Requirements: NAIC DHA Background Investigation

Salary Range: $38/hr-$42/hr

Position Type / Anticipated Shift Schedule: Part-time position. Monday-Friday, 4 hour afternoon/evening shift (shifts are flexible, will fall between 1:00pm - 9:00pm EST). The shift worked includes two 15-minute paid breaks.

Job Description Summary

Under the supervision of the VISTANT Project Manager, the Histotechnologist will be responsible for supporting the mission of the DHA JPC Contract shall meet the qualifications for the specialty.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Archive, catalog, and file slides while identifying stains on the slides using a microscope.
  • Use spreadsheets and a database for cataloging and filing purposes.
  • Organize slides for long-term storage and other duties as required by the department.
  • Responsible for identification and discerning the nature of stains on slides, relabeling them, archiving and cataloging them. Maintaining spreadsheets and database entries.
  • Shall prepare record-keeping systems and procedures for archival research and for the retention or destruction of records.
  • Examine and study slides under microscope to detect deviations from norm and report abnormalities which may require further decisions.
  • Conduct physical inspection of slides to allow for cataloging by identifier for the retention or destruction of slides.
  • Organize slides into appropriate staging locations and storage locations while maintaining movement and tracking logs or documents.
  • Archiveslides for long-term storage by identifier in JPC’s Repository.
  • Establish procedures for the electronic record-keeping of slides.
  • Establish and maintain user friendly electronic systems (Excel or other electronic database) for archival research of the slides.
  • Respond to inquiries from members of JPC and advise users on how best to access, use and interpret the slide archives.
  • Identify ways of protecting and preserving collections.
  • Handle, analyze and interpret medical documents, reports and other materials that have historical significance towards research and education programs and projects.
  • Perform all the basic functions of a Histotechnologist of processing, embedding, microtomy, routine, special and immunohistochemistry staining.
  • The Histotechnologist is required to follow all mandatory documents to the extent they apply to this contract.

QualificationsExperience

  • Must have at least five years extensive experience in the applications and methods used in the preservation, fixation, processing, embedding, microtomy, and staining (including special stains and immunohistochemistry) of tissue specimens.
  • Experience should come from a Medical or Clinical setting, specifically working with Anatomical Pathological Tissue in all stages of the specimen collection, handling and storage process.
  • A minimum of five years of experience archiving, managing, inventorying and cataloging tissue samples as slides, blocks, or scans.
  • Preferred candidates will hold experience with various platforms for the processes of immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining and slide quality control.
  • Knowledge in tissue identification through visual acuity and analytical skills to distinguish fine details and differences found in slides.
  • Highly proficient with Word, Excel and PowerPoint, can use these programs to analyze and present data from a clinical, lab or medical repository setting to be shared with clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Histology certified or certifiable.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills are required.
  • US citizenship is required for this position.

Pay: $38.00 - $42.00 per hour
