The Associate Chaplain provides faith engagement opportunities and spiritual care for students, advising and equipping faculty and staff, enriching the spiritual and intellectual life of the campus, assists in building a vibrant University community of faith and learning, and helps further the lofty mission of Andrews University to Seek Knowledge, Affirm Faith and Change the World.
The Associate Chaplain does this work as an integral part of the Andrews University Center for Faith Engagement (CFE), grounded in the mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The spiritual life master plan partly informs the vision and strategy for the CFE.

Qualifications summary


  • MDiv degree is preferred.
  • Masters Degree in a relevant field is required.
  • Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Credit(s) is preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion & effectiveness for the faith development of young adults is required.
  • Demonstrated proficient cultural fluency & experience in serving a diverse population is required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience is required.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Duties and responsibilities


CFE seeks to build a team with diverse experience, skills, gifts, and backgrounds. The Associate Chaplain assists the University Chaplain and forms part of the CFE executive team in strategic planning, assessment, and implementation processes for holistic faith engagement programming and strategies according to the Spiritual Life Masterplan. This includes:
  • Providing leadership in critical areas of CFE programming, including faith-building activities, community development, service, training and equipping campus employees in faith engagement, supporting and advising students in various aspects of the university experience to support the university's mission.
  • Actively participating in adapting and refining strategies and programming to ensure the successful delivery of the university's mission to grow students' faith.
  • Develop and oversee strategies and programs that prepare students for mission-minded engagement in various roles from church to home to the workplace.
  • Working closely with university partners and student leaders and integral to the development and execution of discipleship strategies.
  • Maintaining privileged confidentiality in pastoral care and exceptional judgment and virtues in stewarding their engagement, whether in the campus community, with university partners, or in digital environments.
  • Assisting in processes that intentionally seek to build positive relationships between students and Chaplains and engage students in the spiritual life of the campus.
  • Institute processes for continuous improvement in executing programs and adaptation for effectiveness in serving the student population.
  • Managing the budget for all programs in his/her direct downline of programming.
  • Maintaining professional growth through involvement in professional organizations and other activities such as Center for Faith Engagement programs and missions.
  • Serves in other University committees as assigned.

Additionally, the candidate exhibits God's unconditional love for all of humanity and proactively seeks ways to help students know God and experience God's love.

Supervisory responsibilities


  • Supervises and mentors student chaplains, student leaders, and other programmatic aspects of CFE as assigned.

Qualifications

Additional highly desired qualifications include:
  • Experience in ministry or work in urban settings and populations is preferred.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communication.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.

Technical competencies


  • Must be able to work with Microsoft Suite or equivalent software tools
  • Must be able to have basic computing, emailing, and scheduling skills
  • Must be able to learn and grow in relevant software programs that support CFE's work.

  • Must be willing and passionate to help others and advocate for students.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to embody the principles of Micah 6:8.

Physical demands

The physical demands described here represent those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, stand, climb, and use the senses of sight, touch, hearing, speech, and smell.
Physical solid stamina is required to handle the stress of multiple responsibilities, critical decisions, and crisis care that impact student lives. Thus, along with the various programs of CFE, this position will often demand intensive, 7-day work weeks that may average 55 hours per week and often include evenings. The ideal candidate must have cultivated resilient emotional hygiene and self-care practices that also include a commitment to spiritual growth. Must be able to lift and move a minimum of 25 lbs.
