Job Title: Public Health Specialist

Immediate Supervisor: Public Health Nurse
General Summary:
A Public Health Specialist's job is to carry out duties and tasks as assigned by the Health Officer, Public Health Nurse, Environmentalist, Registrar as needed. The Public Health Specialist works under the supervision of the Public Health Nurse. The Public Health Specialist will work cooperatively with the Health Department team to satisfy the requirements of clients and county government while following procedures and policies.
Principle Responsibilities and Duties (but are not limited to):
Assisting in special and seasonal projects as requested, such as Vaccine Clinics, Rabies Clinics, and on-Site Clinics.
Assisting in maintaining continuity of office services when regular staff is absent, (i.e. vacations, scheduled sick days, etc.).
Duties will include contributing to an acceptable system of recall and call of patients.
Maintaining forms and documents for each health department team; sorting and filing forms and documents for each health department team, and maintaining health promotion material in the health department.
Ensuring to collect and maintain statistical information needed for ad hoc and regular reports.
Collecting and entering data on computer, converting paper files to computer generated files.
Duties will include customer service at front counter and by phone which includes the provision of information, collection of client information, and the assisting of clients with services as needed. Helps clients and team members with completion of appropriate forms and applications, answering inquiries, and directing clients to appropriate services as needed.
Attendance of in-service trainings, meetings, and off-site conferences as required. Other duties may be required as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Must have working knowledge of computer use with ability to learn database and office applications such as Word and Excel. Will need to become knowledgeable and accurate on other software programs as needed for the department.
Must be able to demonstrate accuracy in processing detailed information.
Must have basic math and filing skills, basic knowledge of accounting preferred. Must be knowledgeable in the proper use of grammar and spelling.
Must have elective oral and written communications skills. Must be able to handle multiple tasks with interruptions.
Must be familiar with office equipment: copier, multi-line phones, computers, fax machine, etc.
Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of client information (i.e. HIPAA).
Must be able to function professionally, individually, and as a member of a team, and have the ability to work closely and communicate effectively with other community/government agencies and professionals.
Must be able to engage in balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, reaching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds, grasping, feeling, writing, typing, keyboarding, and other repetitive motions as well as looking at a computer screen for extended amounts of time.
Must be able to drive (hold valid Indiana driver's license) and provide own transportation.
Working Conditions:
Worker’s location is primarily office environment. Worker must be able to tolerate a busy/noisy workplace, and may be exposed to hostile, verbally abusive, and emotional clients.
