PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Ensure the safety and security of students, staff, and the community as well as protection of property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and proactive patrol of district campuses and property.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  • Current TCOLE Peace Officer License or graduation from a TCOLE accredited Basic Peace Officer Course with ability to immediately qualify for Texas Peace Officer license upon appointment
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Possession of valid Texas Driver’s License with a good driving record

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of the Texas Penal Code, Texas Code of Criminal Procedure, Texas Education Code Chapter 37, and other federal, state, and local laws and ordinances applicable to law enforcement in the school district
  • Ability to interpret and enforce applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations in a reasonable and professional manner
  • Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and to determine the proper course of action
  • Ability to conduct investigations, prepare reports and maintain records and files
  • Ability to obtain information through interview and interrogation
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with superiors, peers, school officials, teachers, students, parents, and the general public
  • Some knowledge of personal computers and their application to police records management
  • Skill in the use and care of firearms

Experience:

  • Graduation from Basic Peace Officer Course at a TCOLE accredited academy

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Safety and Security

  1. Patrol, in vehicle and on foot, designated areas within school buildings and on school building grounds to monitor activities and maintain order, safety, and security.
  2. Patrol, in vehicle and on foot, and respond to disturbances and distractions to restore order, safety, and security.
  3. Detain and question individuals whose actions are suspicious.
  4. Assist visitors by giving directions and needed explanations.
  5. Respond to calls for service that arises from dispatch, self-initiated activity, or the request for assistance from students, staff, or visitors.
  6. Monitor the department and campus issued portable radios and keep dispatch informed of activity and location.
  7. Provide security and crowd/traffic control at school drop off and dismissal, athletic events, extra-curricular events, and other events as needed.
  8. Confer with school administrators on means and methods of increasing safety and security.
  9. Attend training classes and exercises to meet requirements in continuing education and weapons proficiency.
  10. Must periodically be available to respond to calls for service that occur in the night and on the weekends outside of normal working hours.

Enforcement and Investigation

  1. Perform all the duties of a licensed Peace Officer as enumerated in Articles 2.12 and 2.13 of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure.
  2. Enforce criminal laws of the State of Texas and local ordinances within the school district to include making lawful arrests when appropriate.
  3. Enforce traffic and parking laws/ordinances within the district and its periphery to include issuing citations when appropriate.
  4. Investigate criminal offenses, traffic accidents involving district motor vehicles, to include completing offense and crash reports, protecting crime scenes and evidence, locating, preserving, collecting and submitting evidence, questioning victims, suspects, and witnesses, making lawful arrests, and testifying as a witness in court.

Community Relations

  1. Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with students, staff, administrators, fellow police officers and superiors.
  2. Instruct and/or participate in crime prevention programs and other programs designed to reduce substance abuse and gang activities.
  3. Perform liaison duties between school administration, businesses, organizations, other law enforcement agencies, and government/social service agencies.
