Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shop Foreman to oversee mechanics and manage the maintenance and repair of heavy civil construction equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in heavy yellow iron and construction equipment maintenance and repair, as well as excellent leadership and organizational skills. The Shop Foreman will be responsible for ensuring that all equipment is properly maintained, repaired in a timely manner, and meets safety standards to support the smooth operation of construction projects.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of mechanics, providing guidance, training, and support to ensure high-quality workmanship and productivity.
  • Schedule and assign tasks to mechanics based on priorities and deadlines.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to mechanics to foster continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the maintenance and repair of heavy civil construction equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, cranes, loaders, and trucks.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and prolong equipment lifespan.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues, troubleshoot problems, and coordinate repairs with internal or external resources as needed.
  • Ensure all repairs are conducted according to manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  • Maintain inventory of parts, tools, and equipment necessary for repairs and maintenance.
  • Monitor stock levels, reorder parts as needed, and ensure accurate record-keeping of inventory transactions.
  • Enforce safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment for all staff members.
  • Stay current on industry regulations and standards related to equipment maintenance and safety.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify and address potential safety hazards.
  • Keep detailed records of equipment maintenance and repair activities, including work orders, inspection reports, and service histories.
  • Generate reports on equipment performance, maintenance costs, and downtime for management review.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy equipment maintenance and repair, preferably in a construction or civil engineering environment.
  • Experience with GPS tracking systems, as well as proficient knowledge of inventory database systems and purchase orders.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to effectively manage and motivate a team.
  • Strong technical knowledge of heavy civil construction equipment, including diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing mechanical issues and performing repairs using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures related to heavy equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Certification from a technical school or equivalent experience in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment maintenance, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or leadership role in a maintenance or repair facility.
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for tracking equipment maintenance activities and inventory.
  • Additional certifications or training in specific types of heavy equipment or specialized repair techniques.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces as required.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and occasionally travel to job sites.
