The City of Bakersfield is Hiring a Recreation Specialist Near Bakersfield, CA

Description SALARY $27.22 - $33.09/Hourly
$4,717.27 - $5,735.25/Month
Please note: An additional 5% increase will be effective 7/1/2024. ISSUE DATE: 5/20/24 FILING DEADLINE: 6/3/24 by 1:00 PM Pacific Time
THE POSITION: Under direction, assists in the planning and delivery of selected recreation programs and activities to the community; provides assistance and support of recreation facilities and sites; performs other duties as required. May be assigned limited programming tasks for adult and youth sports, after-school programs, leisure classes, special events and educational programs.
Representative Duties
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: The following typical tasks and responsibilities are representative of this class. They are descriptive, not limiting. Essential Duties: Leads and implements recreational activities such as: center activities, sports, arts and crafts, special events, contests, drama, and other related activities at the following locations: a park, community center, school, or related facility; Interacts with various age groups, organizations, and recreation users to exchange ideas; Leads subordinate staff in programming, care, and maintenance of equipment, facility, and supplies; keeps records and encourages community involvement; Performs physical activities such as: setting up or taking down chairs and tables, carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds, preparing for special events and standing for long periods.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applications will be accepted only from those applicants who clearly demonstrate on the COMPLETED City APPLICATION, RESUME, AND SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE that they possess the minimum qualifications which include:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Recreation or closely related field; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid California Class “C” driver’s license.
  • Desirable: Knowledge of personal computer applications.
OTHER MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: Public recreation principles and methods; personnel practices; recreational, social and cultural needs of all age groups. Ability to: Lead and coordinate a recreation activity; maintain program costs within budget; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish effective working relationships; exercise sound judgment within City policy. Physical Conditions or Special Working Conditions: Standard office environment and working conditions; however, must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Must possess sufficient strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Note: Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays. VACATION: Accrual rate is determined by bargaining unit.
1-4 years of service: 10 days per year.
5-13 years of service: 15 days per year.
14 years of service: 20 days per year.
Vacation - Fire Safety Shift Personnel Only1-4 years of service: 4.68 (24-hr. duty shifts)
5-15 years of service: 7.02 (24-hr. duty shifts)
16 years of service: 9.36 (24-hr. duty shifts)
HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year.
SICK LEAVE: Earned at the rate of one working day per month of service to a maximum of 120 days; portions therafter may be convertible.
ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE: 10 days per year for General Supervisory and Management employees.
INSURANCE: The City and the employee share contributions for premiums for health insurance coverage. The City provides life insurance benefits based on bargaining unit. Visit the City's Employee Benefit website for detailed information (rates and plan information).
RETIREMENT: Benefits are provided by the City's participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System (PERS). 2% @ 62 for new hire Miscellaneous and 2.7% @ 57 for Safety (Fire & Police). Visit the City's Retirement websitefor additional information.
