Brooklyn Middle School Assistant PrincipalREPORTS TO: Building PrincipalQualificationsThe position of Assistant Principal is a 12 month position. The assistant principal is involved in all operations of the middle school. This position requires the following qualifications:
  • Possession of or eligibility for a Connecticut State Department of Education Certificate #092, Intermediate Administrator;
  • Administrative and/or teaching experience with strong interpersonal skills and the capability to communicate with students, staff, parents and the community;
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instructional practices to improve student learning as well as the use of technology in the learning process;
  • Demonstrates collaborative leadership qualities
Major Job Goals
  • Assists in the implementation and supervision of programs and activities, including accurate and timely state reporting.
  • Shares with the principal the responsibility of protecting the health and welfare of students.
  • Assists in establishing and implementing standards for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline consistent with the Board of Education policy and the Student Handbook.
  • Supervises and evaluates the activities of certified and non-certified staff members in the performance of their duties.
  • Assumes a leadership role in all areas of responsibility.
  • Coordinates and supervises the middle school program and activities in the absence of the principal.
StaffPERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops schedules for both teachers and aides as requested by the principal.
  • Supervises staff as requested by the principal.
  • Coordinates assignments of substitutes (both teaching and non-teaching).
  • Coordinates the work of student teachers within the assigned curricula area.
  • ?Attends before and after school sponsored activities
Students
  • Resolves all discipline referrals in a fair and just manner, and maintains records of any disciplinary actions taken and communicates effectively with stakeholders.
  • Coordinates attendance programs in conjunction with the school nurse as defined by Board Policy.
  • Assists teachers and other staff members with student discipline/classroom management problems including supervision of the ERR Program.
  • Actively participates in district leadership activities including tracking and presenting data to the Superintendent and the Board of Education.
  • Counsels individual students, and when necessary makes appropriate referrals for 504 services and/or special education services.
  • Represents the administration at PPT and 504 meetings for students in the middle school, supports transition of 4th graders to the middle school.
  • Coordinates and supervises the Mentor/Mentee Program for students at the middle school.
Extracurricular Programs
  • Administers the extracurricular program of the middle school.
  • Has general supervisory responsibility for student activities, athletic events, and other activities as assigned.
  • Arranges transportation for team participation in the interscholastic sports programs.
Community/Parents
  • Assists in the interpretation of school and district programs, policies, and procedures to students, parents, staff and community.
  • Works with community and local agencies to support healthy school environment and strong school attendance.
  • Promotes services with parents, faculty and student groups as requested in educational and related activities.
Transportation
  • Assumes responsibility for safe transportation in grades 5-8, and the district as needed.
  • Supervises the daily bus program at the middle school - both a.m. and p.m., in addition to the After School Program.
School Facilities/Equipment Supplies
  • Assists in safety inspections and fire/safety/emergency drills as requested.
  • Oversees textbook, equipment and supply inventories.
Other
  • Serves as a positive representative to the Brooklyn Public Schools.
  • Attends the Board of Education meetings as requested.
  • Accepts other tasks and responsibilities as requested by the principal and/or the superintendent.
