The celebration of inclusivity and diversity is essential to helping MANNA achieve its mission to involve, educate, and unite all people in the work of ending hunger in Western North Carolina.Position Summary: The Controller position is responsible for oversight of general accounting and financial reporting functions. The Controller will lead the daily finance operations and manage the accounting team staff including functional responsibility for all the general ledger activities, contractual compliance and grant reporting. The Controller will assist the CFO in ensuring that appropriate systems and procedures are established and maintained to support effective program implementation. The Controller will work closely with supervisors and staff to educate the organization on accounting procedures as well as explore ways the finance function can best support program operations. Additionally, the Controller will support leadership in developing strategies to enhance and better integrate the various organizational systems (Inventory, HR, IT and Finance).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements:
  • Routinely review and update the cost allocation process
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures against approved budgets.
  • Coordinate all audit activity and gather 990 information.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present accurate and timely financial schedules and reports:
  • Clearly communicate financial statement information
  • Inform leadership of new or unusual revenue or cost trends
  • Assist with the annual budgeting and planning process
  • Administer and review all financial plans
  • Perform variance analysis and provide explanations as needed
  • Support the CFO in engaging the board's audit and finance committees around issues and trends in financial operating models.
  • Oversee financial, project/program and grants accounting:
    • Ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/contractual period
    • Gather financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with program leadership:
  • Assess the financial efficacy of program operations
  • Establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets and ensure consistency with policies and investment guidelines.
  • Leverage strengths of the finance team members:
    • Develop and implement training programs to help each team member maximize individual and organizational goals
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization
  • Maintain book balances and perform monthly reconciliations of all bank and investment accounts.
  • Create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or equivalent required; CPA preferred, Master’s degree preferred.
  • 5-10 years of finance/accounting experience, including managing financial accounting professionals.
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and financial management information systems.
  • Understanding and experience with governmental regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Broad based knowledge of the non-profit business environment.
  • Strong experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and enterprise accounting and document management software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, collaboratively and communicate well within a remote team
  • Sensitivity and passion related to issues of poverty and hunger relief
