Established in 2003, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Foundation(UMAF), a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, exists to raise philanthropic funds in support of the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s mission and highest aspirations. Located on the Amherst campus and wholly dedicated to supporting the University’s mission, UMAF is a separately governed nonprofit organization with its own health, wellness, and retirement benefits. UMAF serves the University of Massachusetts Amherst community by serving as a best practices resource for fundraising strategy and implementation.

About the role

Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Advancement Services, the Director of Business Intelligence, is responsible for leading the development and implementation of data-driven strategies to support fundraising efforts. This individual will leverage their strong Tableau skills to create compelling visualizations and dashboards that provide actionable insights for advancement teams. The Director will collaborate closely with various departments to identify key metrics, analyze data, and provide actionable intelligence to optimize fundraising performance and donor engagement.

Location: This is a full-time hybrid position and is open to employees in select US states: Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire.

What you'll do

1. Data Strategy

  • Develop and execute data strategy aligned with the organization's fundraising goals.
  • Identify key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the success of advancement efforts.
  • Collaborate with leadership to establish data governance policies and ensure data quality and integrity.
  • Stay current with industry trends and best practices in data analytics and business intelligence.

2. Tableau Development

  • Design and develop interactive Tableau dashboards and visualizations to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Create compelling data stories that communicate insights effectively to diverse stakeholders.
  • Optimize Tableau performance and ensure seamless integration with other data systems.
  • Provide training and support to users on Tableau best practices and functionality.

3. Data Analysis and Modeling

  • Perform data mining and segmentation to support targeted marketing and personalized donor experiences.
  • Collaborate with data science team to implement machine learning and modeling techniques.

4. Reporting and Insights

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive suite of reports and dashboards to track fundraising performance.
  • Provide regular updates and insights to leadership and advancement teams.
  • Respond to ad hoc data requests and provide analysis to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior leadership.

5. Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Foster strong partnerships with advancement teams, including major gifts, annual giving, and alumni relations.
  • Collaborate with IT, database, and operations teams to ensure data accuracy and system integrations.
  • Work closely with finance and accounting to reconcile financial data and ensure accurate reporting.
  • Engage with external partners and vendors to stay current with industry best practices and technologies.

6. Team Leadership

  • Supervise and mentor a team of business intelligence professionals.
  • Set clear goals and expectations, providing ongoing feedback and support.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify and implement training and professional development opportunities for team members.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or experience in a related field, such as computer science, statistics, or business analytics
  • Progressive experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or a related field.
  • Expert-level Tableau skills, with a strong portfolio of dashboards and visualizations.
  • Proven leadership and management experience.
  • Knowledge of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL processes.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and presentation abilities.
  • Ability to translate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience with CRM systems and fundraising databases.
  • Commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.

Proposed Annual Salary Range:

$88,000 - $98,000
