TITLE: Maintenance Worker
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
REPORTS TO: Public Works Operations Manager
SUPERVISES: N/A
WAGE RANGE: $4,206.00 - 5,022.17 per month
NATURE OF WORK:
Positions in this classification work under the supervision of the Operations Manager and perform general duties that are necessary to maintain, repair, operate, and install basic infrastructure in public works and parks systems. Incumbents must have a general working knowledge of a wide variety of maintenance tasks and are called upon to complete small construction projects as well as routine maintenance programs. Positions in this classification use and maintain a variety of city owned equipment including back hoes, dump trucks, truck and trailer combinations, mowers, and snow removal equipment Work is conducted mostly out of doors and incumbents are frequently exposed to inclement weather conditions, traffic, hazardous chemicals and potentially dangerous equipment. Positions are subject to call-out for snow removal or emergency response. Maintenance Workers may be required at times to carry a two-way pager and may be assigned to 24-hour stand-by.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Public Works:
In the Public Works Department, positions in this classification install, repair and maintain City owned utility systems including water, sewer and streets. These positions install and repair waterlines, read and repair meters, take samples for water quality testing, maintain pumps. haul asphalt; blade roads, patch and roll city streets, replace or repair street signs and install or repair sewer lines. Incumbents also are involved in building renovation projects and snow removal.
Parks:
In the Parks Department, these positions mow lawns, clean parks maintain bail fields. fertilize, use chemicals to control pests and weeds, maintain sprinkler systems, stock rest rooms, install landscaping and maintain park related equipment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Duties are performed primarily in the field. Incumbents are exposed to inclement weather conditions, traffic and hazardous construction situations. Duties require strenuous physical activity and include standing, stooping, crawling and twisting. Incumbents must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and able to perform duties that include getting in and out of excavations for the installation of water and sewer mains, meters, fire hydrants water, pumps operation of graders back hoes and dump trucks.

Experience: This is an entry-level position; a basic knowledge of mechanics and maintenance and construction equipment is desirable.
Training: May be required to obtain Grade I Certification in Water Distribution Management, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
