Type: TribalSalary Range: Salary NegotiableOpen Period: 5/16/2024 until filledSummary: The Health Information Technician (HIT) is primarily responsible for the management of patients' healthcare records. Organizes and manages health information data to ensure that it's accurate, accessible, and secure in our electronic systems. The HIT maintains the overall knowledge and skills required for managing patient records and healthcare information within the electronic health record data systems. Is responsible for creating, collecting, distributing, tracking and maintaining Protected Health Information (PHI). The HIT must at all times safeguard and protect the patient's rights of privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient's medical information and that all release of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, policy and privacy statutes. Job Announcement Flyer: Health Information Technician- Seward JVN 05.25.2024.pdf [pdf - 159.58 KB]Duties: Demonstrates knowledge of HIPAA Privacy Practices and Release of Information policies and procedures and can assist patients and staff relative to the HIM department responsibilities regarding authorizations, patient access, request for amendments, accounting of disclosures, and minimum necessary standards.Under minimum supervision, provides support and services for the retrieval, scanning, handling, storing and archiving of PHI.Organizes, analyzes, prepares, scans, and indexes PHI into the electronic health record (EHR) databases to ensure quality, accuracy and completeness of patient information.Validate record requests for accuracy and completeness before processing.Safeguards the patient's right to privacy by ensuring that only authorized individuals have access to the patient's medical information and that all releases of information are in compliance with the request, authorization, policies and HIPAA regulations.Assists patients, processes mail, responds to telephone and e-mail inquiries, and retrieves facsimile (fax) inquiries in a timely and professional manner.Scans all incoming requests into the patient's health record.Enters and processes health services PHI requests into the Health Information Management (HIM) database for processing and tracking purposes.Registers new requestors into the HIM database(s).Prepares outgoing PHI requests by determining appropriate secured delivery means.Uses standard operating office equipment, electronic computer information systems, and the EHR to meet daily department and employee performance goals.Maintains current knowledge related to applicable statutes, regulations, and standards necessary to perform the job.Provides quality customer service to both internal and external customers.Serves as an information resource for Chugachmiut departments.Willingness to cross-train in administrative roles to support front desk duties.Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with staff and the Alaska Healthcare System for appropriate service integration. Attends all OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory compliance training as directed or required.Applies patient privacy knowledge to include the 1974 Privacy Act, HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 is required as use of patient record is an integral part of the position and privacy of individuals must be protected to the fullest.Conforms to safety policies and general housekeeping practices. Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent.One year experience in a medical setting preferred.Experience using an electronic medical records application preferred.College courses in Health Information Science are preferred.
