City of Seattle is Hiring a Water Quality Analyst Near Seattle, WA

An online application including response to the supplemental questionnaire must be fully completed for consideration. Seattle Public Utilities' (SPU) Water Quality Lab Division is seekingWater Quality Analystto help ensure compliance with the WA Dept of Health with regulatory monitoring with drinking water sample analysis. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with regulatory rules such as the Total Coliform Rule and the Surface Water Treatment Rule. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting testing on various water sources to ensure water quality. This position reports to the Microbiology Supervisor.

  • Perform routine bacteriological and chemical analysis following standard procedures, and methods.
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instrumentation and equipment.
  • Record data from analyses and associated quality assurance tests to ensure accurate and complete documentation of all lab work.
  • Track and process samples using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) by entering and calculating final sample results, and preparing monthly, quarterly and annual water sample reports.
  • Check all results for compliance with Quality Control (QC) requirements, report anomalies or QC failures, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Prepare media or chemical solutions according to standard methods for the analysis of water by bacteriological or chemical methods.
  • Assist in the training of Water Quality Analyst Assistants and Laboratory Technicians.
  • Analyze performance evaluation samples to maintain Department of Health laboratory accreditation.
  • Perform special studies and prepare written reports.
  • Collect water samples and perform other duties on an as needed basis.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • This positiondoes not have a remote work option. The successful candidate must work from the Water Quality Lab. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor. 
  • After the initial three (3) months of training, the successful candidate will revert to a work schedule that requires working on either Saturdays or Sundays
  • Must be available to work weekends and holidays
  • May be required to stand for extended periods of time
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds
  • May be required to handle or work with toxic/hazardous substances
  • Outdoor work may include water quality monitoring activities on boats and around bodies of water
  • Most work is performed in a laboratory environment and appropriate safety precautions must be taken

Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change as conditions require. ExperienceOne (1) year experience in water microbiology, water biology, or water chemistry laboratory.
EducationBachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, or a related field (other combinations of education, training and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability). 
License: Valid Washington State driver license to drive to water sampling collection sites on an as needed basis required at time of appointment, a -Department of Licensing Driver’s Abstract (driving record/history) documenting a valid/unencumbered driver's license, $15 cost to the candidate. 
Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS). 
  • Working knowledge of microbiological analytical methods and instruments such as incubators, autoclaves, boilers, and vacuum pumps. 
  • Experience in the field of drinking water quality and analysis. 
  • Ability to keep detailed notes. 
  • Ability to work in a laboratory team setting. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. 
  • Commitment to City Values and Race and Social Justice as core principles in this role.

The full salary range for this position is: $42.30 - $49.41 Hourly
