POSITION PURPOSE: The Traveling Operator (TO) will be trained to operate and maintain wastewater plants at several locations around the country. The purpose of the position is to assist with new account startups, temporary operations, and to cover our existing facilities while local operators are out on PTO/sick time. The (TO) will be responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the wastewater plants they visit, including process changes to meet compliance, troubleshooting processes & equipment, operational management, maintenance (routine, reactive, and preventive), process & compliance sampling, laboratory testing, and writing and distributing a daily shift report. In addition, the Traveling Operator (TO) will assist with the startup of new wastewater operating contracts until full-time local operators are hired. The TO will be responsible for training the newly hired operator(s). The TO will communicate with the client and with Veolia’s Project Manager, regarding the operation during their time at the facility. The TO will be required to travel and be away from home for extended periods of time - this can range from 1-2 weeks at a time, all the way up to 1 or more months for certain projects. While working at the facilities away from the Atlanta area, the work week could be a 7-day work week with 8-12 hour shifts. The shifts could be daylight or night turn and may include holidays/weekends. While working at sites in the Atlanta area, the operator will consistently work a minimum of 40 hours

PRIMARY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Some experience in a related position and environment preferred.
  2. Must consistently demonstrate the ability to learn and independently operate assigned machines and equipment meeting or exceeding processing and quality targets.
  3. Must demonstrate ability to learn and independently operate equipment such as pumps, engines, centrifuge, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, dryers, chemical feed, odor control, disinfection equipment, sludge processing filters, belt presses and measuring/control devices, testing equipment and material handling equipment.
  4. Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  5. Start up and shut down (normal and emergency) plant systems and components.
  6. Operate, monitor and control plant systems; visually inspect, monitor equipment and process conditions.
  7. Prepares equipment for maintenance work. Reviews, follows and, if qualified, revises detailed process operating procedures, maintenance procedures and safety procedures.
  8. Troubleshoots equipment to restore to operation.
  9. Analyzes charts and logs to identify potential or actual problems. Identifies system problems to stabilize plant to normal conditions.
  10. Trains new operators in the area, reinforcing safety and environmental principles. Loading and unloading of railcars and tank trucks.
  11. Perform laboratory analysis of products. Clerical duties as required. Operate mobile equipment. Participate/Lead various site teams. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Willing and able to work in a High Hazard environment; outdoors, indoors, elevated heights and confined spaces.
  • Willing and able to wear required PPE (personal protective equipment) such as steel toes, hardhats, protective eyewear, face shields, respirator, chemical acid suit, etc.
  • Willing and able to climb stairs, ladders; stand, walk, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl; visual acuity for close work; able to reach overhead; able to hear and respond to alarms. · Willing and able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Qualifications

Education / Experience / Background

  • Wastewater license preferred but not required.
  • High School Diploma/GED equivalent Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment Experience maintaining, repairing and troubleshooting industrial equipment/machinery.
  • Ability to navigate the tools of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc. and learn new computer systems and software applications.\
  • Current and valid driver’s license – willing and able to obtain powered industrial truck certification.
  • Willing and able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, including overtime, nights, weekends, holidays and short notice call-in if required.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

  • Must have the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions). Must have the ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  • Must be able to serve rotational 24-hour emergency on-call if required by site.

Required Certification / Licenses / Training

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and a safe driving record. 
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and a criminal background check.
