SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary responsibility is assumed by this person for the management and administration of programming, counseling, referral, staff training and supervision in one residential living area on campus. The Resident Director (RD) is responsible for developing a stimulating learning community that is conducive to total student development and that complements and accentuates the educational mission of the University. In all aspects of the position, the RD supports and celebrates diverse people and lifestyles. Essentially, the RD role is one of commitment to the philosophies of student and community development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leadership and Supervision

  • Maintain the supervision of Resident Assistants (RAs), and Senior Resident Assistant (SRA).
  • Ensure that all RAs on his/her team meet the job description and performance standards.
  • Assist with and participate in the selection and evaluation of student RA staff.
  • Support the Director and Assistant Direct of Residence Life by assisting in planning, implementing, facilitating, and attending all regular student RA staff trainings. This includes fall training, spring training and additional in-service.
  • Communicate with RA staff on a weekly basis through staff meetings as well as daily informal contact. Ensure that meetings provide a vehicle for two-way information flow and discussion regarding the general atmosphere and condition of the hall community.
  • Participate in all leadership training opportunities for Residence Life and Student Services staff.
  • Monitor the maintenance and safety of all residential areas on campus.

Learning Community Development

  • Promote positive value of academic achievement as well as development of responsible community membership.
  • Develop and implement processes for effectively handling misconduct, emotional disturbances, and other community concerns. Coordinate efforts with appropriate Residence Life staff and other campus departments to assure timely resolution.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of availability and accessibility to resident students, particularly during evenings and weekends.
  • Take meals in the dining facilities often to maintain visibility, approachability, and opportunities for interaction with students as well to help monitor food service quality.
  • Shares responsibility with other Resident Directors for weekly on-call coverage of all on campus residential communities. The RD on-call will carry the on-call cell phone for the week and answer calls at all times. The RD on-call will conduct one round of all residential areas (sometime between the hours of 9pm and midnight) on both Friday and Saturday night. During rounds RD will make face to face contact with RA on-call of each building to check in.
  • Oversee hall program efforts to ensure educational, cultural, social, and recreational opportunities for all residents: ensure ongoing advising, training, and support of student staff and hall leaders in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of hall programming.
  • Develop a responsible community in which ownership of the facilities is encouraged among residents, and where vandalism, theft, and other forms of physical destruction are discouraged.

Administration

  • Actively participate in weekly Residence Life staff meetings. Effectively and accurately represent student staff and resident issues in all discussions to facilitate sound decision-making.
  • Report maintenance and custodial concerns electronically in an efficient manner such that needs gain attention and problems are resolved in a timely fashion.
  • Develop and maintain positive and productive working relationships with facility services, food service, and security personnel.
  • Administer and maintain documentation of routine fire safety checks.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life and Assistant Director of Residence Life in development of procedures for housing registration, hall assignments, opening and closing the residence halls, and room changes/consolidation. Assume primary responsibility for completion of these procedures within respective residence hall.
  • Maintain high level of confidentiality regarding student, departmental, divisional, and University information and activities when appropriate.
  • Assist the Director of Residence Life and Assistant Director of Residence Life in the development of research and assessment methods to obtain data on student interests, perceptions, and needs.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

  • Facilitate personal and professional development of RA staff members such that they are effective role models, mentors, and leaders for their residents.
  • Serve as a means for students to learn about campus and community resources.
  • Integrate Residence Life and formal classroom education by encouraging faculty involvement in residence hall programs and providing materials and workshops that are supportive and complementary of academic work.
  • Be a resource for all Residence Life/University constituents: respond to concerns, questions, and other issues from students, parents, University officials, and others in a positive, professional manner that supports the University, its vision, and mission.
  • Perform other special tasks, projects, and duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life, Assistant Director of Residence Life, or the Dean of Students.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or some college or equivalent experience required.
  • Master’s degree in College Student Personnel or related field preferred.
  • Experience living in a group setting expected.
  • Residence Life or Student Activities experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of student and/or human development strongly desired.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum structure and guidance expected.
  • Must have solid problem-solving skills.
  • Willing and able to take initiative.
  • Ability to facilitate multiple tasks with frequent interruptions.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Ability to work weekends, evenings and on-call as required.

RD Reappointment: This appointment is only for the 2024-2025 academic year. At the end of the spring semester the Director of Residence Life will conduct an evaluation of the RD’s performance to determine if reappointment is in the best interest of the Residence Life Department. Reappointment is not guaranteed.
