UNITED COLLEGE ACTION NETWORK (U-CAN), INC.

JOB TITLE: COLLEGE PREPARATION GUIDANCE TECHNICIAN
BASE FUNCTION:

Be comfortable with working with High School Students

Be able to commute throughout the Sacramento Area
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, assist certificated U-CAN staff in delivering/reinforcing
instruction of college/career preparation information to individual or groups of students in a classroom
or other learning environment, assist in the preparation of instruction materials, provide routine clerical
support, collect and manage student data and assist with, support and perform a wide variety of U-CAN
duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Reinforce instruction as directed by lead presenter/teacher, monitor and oversee student engagement
and individual assignments; assist students with a variety of instructional games and activities.
Assist student with the completion of forms, applications and documentation related to the college
application/admissions process; verify accuracy and completion of forms.
Attend and represent U-CAN at a variety of meetings, conferences and workshops; facilitate meetings,

Participate in two week HBCU College Fair (Every September, traveling outside of Sacramento is mandatory)

as directed; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work as necessary.
Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, duplicating and distributing
materials and maintaining various records and files; organize materials to assist student learning and
task completion.
Assist students with building self-esteem by providing examples, emotional support, a friendly (but
professional) attitude and general guidance.
Assist parents with school involvement and engagement/participation as required.
Assist with school activities involvement and participation as required.
Perform related duties as assigned.

DEMONSTRATED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, handwriting, punctuation and vocabulary.
Oral and written communication skills.
Policies and objectives of assigned programs and activities.
Curriculum, goals and objectives of U-CAN programs.
Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
Safe practices in classrooms and learning environments; classroom procedures and appropriate student
conduct.
Basic computer operations.

The coordinator recruits, manages, and supports the relationship between U-CAN and its school/site-based program staff, and is responsible for all aspects of communication with our community resources/constituents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Attend and represent the organization at a variety of meetings, conferences, and workshops; facilitate meetings, as directed; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work as necessary.

Perform a variety of clerical duties such as preparing instructional materials, duplicating, and distributing materials and maintaining various records and files; organize materials to assist student learning and task completion.

Assist parents with school involvement and engagement/participation as required.

Assist with school activities involvement and participation as required.

Work with Registrar/Attendance Office staff to maintain records on program participants, including attendance, GPA’s and transcripts.

Talk with students/families that are sometimes in dire situations or going through difficult transition. Be compassionate to their situation and work with them in a positive way to help them make appropriate choices as it relates to transitioning from high school to post-secondary options. Be able to help students and their families find solutions to their concerns by thinking critically and clearly about situations that need solutions.

Be able to manage multiple student cases with various needs and are in various stages of need/assistance/support.

Manage successfully large amounts of paperwork to respond to the accountability requirements of the organizational data reporting requirements. Be organized and efficient with your time.

Submit weekly student/program contact list for review to insure all program deliverables are met in a timely manner.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and privileged information.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Ability to work effectively both independently and as a part of a team.

Understand and relate to students with special needs and of diverse backgrounds. Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly learning environment.

Answer telephones and greet the public courteously.

Establish and maintain a variety of records and files.

Compile and verify data and prepare reports.

Maintain routine records and submit forms and information to office in a timely manner. . Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and assigned software. Complete work with many interruptions.

Work independently with little direction.

Prepare and deliver oral presentations.

Meet schedules and timelines.

Type a minimum of 35 works per minutes for clear copy.

Maintain consistent, punctual, and regular attendance.

Hear and speak to exchange information in person or on the telephone.

Move hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard.

See to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities.

Sit or stand for extended periods of time.

Bend at the waist, kneel or crouch to assist students.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Any combination equivalent to graduation for college/university, supplemented by college level coursework in business, psychology, education or a related field and two years of clerical experience involving public contact and record keeping.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver’s license. Must have a working vehicle.

ENVIRONMENT: Indoor/classroom/office work environment. Limited evening/night parent meetings. Constant and/or occasional interruptions. Use of automobile is required.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $40,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
