Lewis Bakeries was founded in 1925 and is one of the few remaining independent bakeries in the Midwest. Our team is devoted to producing high quality products including Bunny Bread, Lewis ½ Loaf, Healthy Life, Sunbeam, and Hartford Farms, to name a few. Lewis is looking for qualified candidates to fill our Transportation Manager position in Murfreesboro, TN

The Transportation Manager reports directly to the Plant Manager and is responsible for supervising all positions within the Transportation department ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operations in a 24-hour plant environment. This role involves planning and coordinating transportation routes, working closely with other departments, and driving continuous process improvements.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan and adjust delivery routes to optimize time, cost, and efficiency.
  • Monitor and adjust vehicle mileage to manage lease agreements.
  • Coordinate delivery processes with Production, Shipping, and Sales teams.
  • Perform weekly payroll for transport drivers and audit pay sheets for accuracy.
  • Train new employees in standard operating procedures and safety practices.
  • Monitor compliance with rules and regulations, enforce discipline, and maintain employee records.
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings to enhance driver awareness of safe operating procedures.
  • Manage driver logs to ensure daily compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Ensure all DOT rules and regulations are followed and maintain up-to-date hazmat and DOT training.
  • Inspect tractors and trailers weekly to meet safety and performance standards.
  • Oversee transportation strategy, including fleet sizing, route analysis, safety programs, and KPI implementation.
  • Develop and implement cost-saving programs and productivity improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain transportation-related documentation, such as vehicle inspection check-sheets and Proof of Delivery documentation.
  • Monitor fuel purchases and implement programs to reduce idling and improve fuel efficiency.
  • Accurately report and record required data.
  • Promote a Continuous Improvement environment to enhance products, services, and processes, aiming for efficiency and profitability.
  • Plan and coordinate manpower and equipment use to ensure consistent product quality and efficient distribution.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with other departments.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work successfully in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Manage transport drivers and assist with shipping as needed.
  • High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree in transportation, supply chain, logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 2-5 years of transportation experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Union Management experience strongly desired.
  • Experience with DOT rules and regulations.
  • Valid Class A CDL license.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to set a vision, manage change, develop others, and plan for continuous improvement.
