THANK YOU!PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the general supervision of the Library Board, the Library Director serves as the administrator of the library with responsibility and authority for organizing and managing the library operations and for planning, directing and coordinating its programs and services, subject to the policies of the Library Board. This job description does not constitute an employment agreement between the employer and employee and is subject to change by the employer as the needs of the employer and requirements of the job change.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Acts as executive officer of the library and administrative officer to the Library Board, prepares agendas, Director's reports and other reports for the Board, reports to the Board on current trends and developments in library service and legislation, prepares and submits the library budget to the Board and advises the Board on policy matters.2. Establishes overall services of the library in light of changing community needs.3. Recruits, selects, hires, supervises, evaluates and terminates library staff.4. Researches, negotiates and oversees the implementation of contracts.5. Acts as spokesperson for the library, relates library objectives to the community and is active in community organizations.6. Works with government officials and other community leaders to discuss the needs and issues of the library.7. Works closely with the Mayor, the City Administrator, Alderpersons, department heads and school staff on issues that affect the library.8. Works with the Library Board in developing a long range plan and is responsible for implementing the plan.9. Maintains the library collection by supervising the staff in the selection of library materials.10. Continuously studies and evaluates the existing library collection in terms of community needs and library trends and recommends appropriate changes for their improvement to the Library Board.11. Directs a program of public relations designed to inform the community about library services.12. Provides reference service on a regularly scheduled basis.13. Cooperates with and contributes to the Milwaukee County Federated Library System in regards to policy, procedures, staff training, etc.14. Reviews security measures for the building and staff and makes recommendations to the Board.15. Interprets library policy when dealing with patron problems.16. Represents the Library Board at City functions, meetings, etc.17. Responsible for the overall physical plant.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS.Inside work environment: 100%. SCHEDULE: Flexible work hours that includes weekends. EQUIPMENT USED: This list includes, but not limited to: 1. Typewriter2. Photocopier3. Computer terminals/printers/scanners, etc.4. Fax machine5. Microfilm reader/printer6. Telephone7. Calculator8. Book Trucks9. AV equipment EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 1. Masters Degree from an American Library Association accredited Library School.2. At least five years experience in a public library, some of which has been in administration.3. Possess or be eligible for a grade 1 Wisconsin Certification.4. Possession of or be eligible for a Wisconsin Motor Vehicle operator's license.This is a Non-Represented, exempt position. The Library Director serves at the pleasure of the Board.VACANCIES IN POSITION: When a vacancy occurs in this position, the Library Board shall advertise for the position, interview the candidates and select the most qualified person for the position. The Board reserves the right to reopen the advertising if, in their opinion, none of the candidates meet the qualifications outlined in this job description.WAGES AND BENEFITS: The Library Board sets the wages. The person selected for this position shall be eligible for all benefits that are outlined in the Non-represented Employee Benefits policy.MEDICAL: New employees: Offer of employment will be contingent upon successfully passing a medical examination, which includes drug testing, prior to appointment, consistent with requirements of the position. PROBATIONARY PERIOD: The Library Director serves at the pleasure of the Board. The Director is evaluated after the first six months and then annually. The Board reserves the right to schedule other evaluations as needed.RESIDENCY: All new employees are required to live within the boundaries set forth in the Non-Represented Employee Benefits Policy.
