Astoria School District No. 1C is seeking applicants for the following position:

JOB TITLE: Family Liaison Assistant (Bilingual) - 8 hrs - District-Wide

REPORTS TO:Director of Instructional Support

EVALUATED BY: Director of Instructional Support

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for assisting the Family Liaison in the support of collaborative efforts in providing communication and resources to families. A strong emphasis on providing assistance with cross-language communication.

QUALIFICATIONS OF POSITION:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent as required by OAR 581-37-030, Oregon Department of Education
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • May be required to obtain a First Aid and/or CPR card.
  • Excellent reading, writing, and speaking in both English and Spanish (native Spanish-speaker preferred)
  • Experience interpreting and translating documents in Spanish required.
  • High level of interpersonal communication and collaborative skills required.
  • Ability to honor professional ethics and confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct guidance or supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the general public using tact, courtesy, and good judgment, and to provide communications to and from parents regarding all school-related topics.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, timeliness, and attention to detail to meet deadlines and provide prompt replies to staff after receiving written requests for translations.
  • Ability to establish a regular work schedule, arrange a work schedule for specific needs, flex hours on an as-needed basis, or a combination of these.
  • An understanding of the needs, challenges, and barriers faced by Latino and/or immigrant families as they relate to accessing and engaging educational systems
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with partners and all school staff
  • Skilled in computer software applications, such as word processing, spreadsheets, and database management currently being used in the district (Google-GSuite). Must also be able to use multi-line telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and other office equipment
  • Ability to work independently on difficult clerical tasks, keep complicated clerical records, and prepare accurate reports
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Perform physical requirements which may include:
    • Moderate degree of physical stamina
    • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
    • Ability to use a telephone, computer, and other office equipment
    • Ability to make frequent trips to and from desks, counters, etc. as well as
    • other areas in the school buildings

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to execute each requirement satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability needed for the position.

  • Support Spanish speaking families to help in navigating school systems (registration, contacting staff/administration, setting up and attending meetings, and appointments and troubleshooting basic questions)
  • Serve as primary support for all District translations of documents and essential communication.
  • Attend meetings where an interpreter may be needed throughout the district.
  • Assist in registration appointments for Spanish-speaking families new to the district which may include the administering of screening assessments and coordination of school visits for new students/families.
  • Work with school staff to identify families in need of additional language support.
  • Assist in carryout communication plans for reaching and engaging with Latino families.
  • Review written materials, letters, and flyers being sent to Spanish speaking families and make recommendations regarding the content and tone of the translation.
  • Assist in the engagement of Latino families with school personnel, administrators, counselors or teachers.
  • Work with Bilingual Family Liaison to assist families with social service resources such as OHP assistance, housing, food or legal assistance as needed. 
  • Acts as a mandated abuse reporter.
  • Knowledge of Astoria School District Policies and building procedures.
  • Regular and acceptable attendance is required.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

POSITION BEGINS: TBD

SALARY RANGE: $23.89/Hourly
