JOB
This position requires a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and the selected candidate for hire must complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, FMCSA Clearinghouse query, and DOT Certification physical examination.This is a highly responsible oversight position involving the operation and management of the City’s Solid Waste Division, including the oversight of all crewmembers. Work entails manual labor and the direction of City solid waste staff, residents, businesses and other agencies for the collection and disposal of special pickup items, residential and commercial waste, recycling, and yard waste throughout the City. Work also involves the daily training, safety, coordination, and assignment of solid waste personnel and vehicles. This position is performed with considerable independence under the general direction of the Public Works Supervisor.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Supervisory Duties: Responsible for the oversight, training, safety, evaluation, and discipline of employeesEstablishes work schedules under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, collection route assignments, and assigns vehicles and equipmentCoordinates crew activities and enforces work standards, practices and policiesTrains and instructs crew members on vehicles, equipment, work procedures and safety precautionsUnder the direction of the Public Works Supervisor will confirm crew attendance, proper use of personal protective equipment, and overall readiness for workOversees that all employees utilize safety equipment and procedures, including pre- and post-trip dutiesAssigns employees to post-collection daily dutiesAssists with and/or completes employee performance reviewsProvides training and cross-training to employees on safety, routes, and equipment/tool useOperational Duties: Performs a variety of advanced manual labor, including operating vehicles and equipment, loading and unloading of refuse, recycling, yard waste, and other materialsMaintains a strong working knowledge of all routes and the operation of all collection vehiclesResponds to and resolves customer requests or complaints in a timely mannerWorks with the Public Works Supervisor to evaluate and plan projects and maintenance proceduresEnsures the maintenance and cleanliness of vehicles within the divisionAssists in the operation of the CityWorks Work Order systemMaintains familiarity with the City’s personnel manual, safety manual, sanitation safety manual and waste and recycling ordinance and provides associated staff trainingCollaborates with customers and the City’s code enforcement officers to enhance the safety of dumpster pads and enclosuresProvides customer education regarding proper waste and recycling disposal protocolsCommunicates daily with the Public Works Supervisor and Public Works Coordinator to receive instructions and regarding the completion of job assignmentsMaintains high standards of safety and efficiency in exercising duties and responsibilitiesInspects dumpsters to ensure good condition; maintains inventory and recommendations for orderingConducts inspections of customer services rendered to determine appropriate surchargesOperates vehicles and equipment of various sizes and weights
