CHICAGO HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE ARTS is Hiring a Music Substitute Near Chicago, IL

School Year: August 2024-May 2025

The Chicago High School for the Arts seeks dynamic part-time teaching artists for the 2024-2025 school year to teach in all areas of the Music Conservatory:

  • Technique classes offered in voice, piano, guitar, percussion, woodwinds, brass and strings

  • Ensemble classes are offered for Choir, Band, Jazz Combo, String Ensemble, Piano Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble

  • Musicianship classes including music theory, keyboard skills, music history, music technology, and professional development

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will be a specialist in the field and will have the passion and skills to create a learning environment that will offer rigorous pre-professional arts training that challenges students to achieve at high levels. Instructors at ChiArts will be required to differentiate instruction; design lesson and unit plans that properly assess student achievement and encourage skill development and critical thinking.

The Music Conservatory at ChiArts provides students of varying levels of previous musical training with an intensive and comprehensive course of study in instrumental and vocal music, with a concentration on classical and jazz genres.

Upon successful completion of the four-year program, ChiArts Music students will have:

  • Mastery of a body of solo repertoire in the classical and/or jazz styles. This is the material from which students will draw for college music auditions

  • A wide range of performance experiences ranging in setting from solo to chamber to large ensemble

  • A high degree of music literacy and a thorough understanding of music theory

  • A solid foundation in aural and keyboard skills

  • A broad knowledge of music history and styles that allows them to bring sensitivity and understanding to performances of varied repertoire

  • Experience with music technology trends of the 21st century

  • Experiences working with nationally recognized teachers and performers

  • Professional development skills to serve them throughout their careers


RESPONSIBILITIES:

An arts instructor’s primary professional responsibility is classroom instruction of ChiArts’ students. Classroom and professional duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Follow the lesson plan provided by the regular instructor.
  • Instruct conservatory-level courses, serving students with various learning styles, abilities, and needs.
  • Employ outstanding classroom management skills and implement the school code of conduct.
  • Communicate information as necessary to the regular instructor to maintain classroom administration and record keeping. This can include grades, attendance records, and student progress.
  • Embrace and promote the ChiArts vision, mission, educational approach, and goals.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years of professional performing experience
  • Minimum 3 years previous teaching experience at a pre-professional or professional level
    • Bachelor’s degree and Illinois State Teacher Certification is preferred, but not required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent classroom management skills
