GENERALSUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of the provider and nursing leadership, the Medical Assistantperforms a variety of administrative and clinical tasks to assist in the quality andcompassionate care provided to patients. These duties may include but are not limitedtothegreetingandescorting ofpatientsto theexamroom,obtainingmedicalhistories,the measurement and recording of vital signs, preparing patients for anexamination/procedure,andassistingtheproviderduringtheexamination/procedure.
PRINCIPLEDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES(PleaseNote:Thefollowingduties&responsibilitiesmay notapply toallambulatory areas):
PatientCare:
1.Performinitial-responsescreeningfollowingprotocolsapprovedbysupervisingprovider.
2.Escortpatienttoroomandpreparespatientforexamination,procedure,andtreatment.
3.Obtainvitalsignsandrecord intheelectronichealth record(EHR).
4.Obtainandrecordpatienthistoryemployingcriticalthinkingskills.
5.Preparefor,setupandassistwithexaminations,procedures,andtreatmentsperprotocols,policies, andprocedures.
6.Prepare,administer,anddocumentoral,parenteralmedicationsandimmunizationsas ordered by the supervising provider. Consistently follows the six rights ofmedication administration. Maintains accurate immunization and medicationadministrationrecords.
7.DocumentcareprovidedduringpatientvisitinEHR.
8.Recognizeandrespondtoemergencies.
9.Actively monitors & respond timely to patient requests via telephone encounter, InBasketmessageand/orMyChartaccordingtoidentifiedtimeframesanddocumentsresponsesin the EHR.
10.Entermedication,radiology,andlabordersintheelectronichealthrecordforprovidersignoff.
11.Dischargepatientprovidingaftervisitinstructionstopatientand/orcaregiverasdirectedbythe provider.
12.Entermedicationrefill/requestperdepartmentguidelines.
Diagnostic:
1.Collectandprocessspecimens.
2.PerformCLIA-waivedtests.
3.Performelectrocardiography,respiratoryandothertestingbasedondepartmentneeds.
4.Performphlebotomy,includingvenipunctureandcapillarypuncture.
Consultation:
1.Serveasa liaisonbetweenpatientsandmedicalstaffintheeventofproblemsorcomplaints.
2.Schedule,coordinate,andmonitorappointments.
3.Scheduleoutpatientprocedures.
4.Applythirdpartyandmanagedcarepolicies,procedures,andguidelines.
5.Obtaininsurancepre-authorizations.
6.Entersreferralsforprovidersignoff.
QualityAssurance:
1.Participateindepartmental/divisionalQualityAssessmentandQualityImprovementPrograms.
2.PracticeStandardPrecautions,includinghandwashinganddisposalofbiohazardousmaterials.
3.Applyprinciplesofasepticandsteriletechnique.
4.Cleaninstrumentsandequipmentperpoliciesandprocedures.
5.ComplywithallHFHSanddepartmentalspecificsafetystandards.
6.Maintaincompliancewithregulatorystandardsregardingpractice,environment,anddocumentation.
Instruction:
1.Functionasahealthcareadvocatetomeetindividual’sneeds.
2.Educateindividualsinofficepoliciesandprocedures.
3.Educate the patient within the scope of practice and as directed by supervisingphysicianinhealthmaintenance,diseaseprevention,andcompliancewithpatient’streatmentplan.
4.Identifycommunityresourcesforhealthmaintenanceanddiseasepreventiontomeetindividual patient needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCEREQUIRED:
·HighschooldiplomaorG.E.D.equivalent.
·Basiccomputerknowledgeandkeyboardingskillspreferred.
·Abilitytoperformawidevarietyofclinicalskillsasrelatedtoambulatorypatientcarepreferred.
·Abilitytoproblem-solvepreferred.
·Possesseffectiveinterpersonalandcommunicationskillspreferred.
·EPIC(ElectronicMedicalRecord)experiencepreferred.
·Professionally Recognized Medical Assistant Certification from the AmericanAssociationofMedicalAssistants(AAMA/CMA),AmericanMedicalTechnologists(RMA), National Health Career Associations Certified Clinical Medical Assistant(CCMA), and National Center for Competency Testing National Certified MedicalAssistant(NCMA)preferred.
AdditionalRequirements:
·GraduateofaMedicalAssistantprogram withcompletionofaformalclinicalexternship(160hourminimum).
OR
·Graduate from a Medical Assistant program without completion of a clinicalexternshipbutwithaminimumone-yearexperienceinclinicalmedicalassistingwithinthe pastfive (5)years.
OR
·CurrentProfessionallyRecognizedMedicalAssistantCertificationwithaminimumoffive(5)years ofexperience in clinicalmedicalassisting.
OR
·LicensedPracticalNurse(LPN).OR
·LicensedParamedic/EmergencyMedicalTechnician(EMT)withatleastone-yearclinicalexperiencein clinicalmedicalsettingwithinthe pastfive(5)years.
OR
·Militarytrainedmedicalpersonnelwithatleastone-yearclinicalexperienceinclinicalmedical setting within thepast five(5)years.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURESREQUIRED:
CurrentBLS-Cuponhireorsuccessfulcompletionbyendoforientation.
