Coordinator for ESL (English as a Second Language)

FLSA Status: Exempt

Grade: 3 (Administrative)

Job Summary

This position is responsible for developing, reviewing, and revising the Division's grades K-12 ESL curriculum; coordinating workshops and professional development activities related to this area; and providing leadership for professional growth opportunities for teachers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops a philosophy for ESL curriculum which is research-based, and which provides guidelines for developing the curriculum.
  • Develops a scope and sequence; sets goals, objectives, and exit standards; and identifies strategies appropriate for implementing the ESL curriculum.
  • Works with curriculum review committees to revise curriculum as needed.
  • Plans and leads teacher in-service and summer workshops in order to keep staff up-to date in ESL best practices.
  • Meets/works with curriculum leaders/chairpersons to plan for ESL programs.
  • Manages local and federal program budgets, fund balances and related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that budgets amounts and expenses are within budget limits and that sound fiscal practices are followed.
  • Collaborates with others (e.g. teachers, administrators, students, parents, other District personnel, community organizations, etc.) to implement and maintain services and/or programs.
  • Evaluates and disseminates materials and resources to the appropriate personnel in each school.
  • Coordinates intake procedures and the administration of the W-APT test for ELL students.
  • Coordinates the administration of the WIDA test for ELL students.
  • Coordinates procurement of interpreters for ELL students and parents
  • Coordinates ESL program components, support needs and materials for the purpose of meeting student needs while complying with District and/or program guidelines.
  • Evaluates program activities and components for the purpose of ensuring that student needs are met while maintaining program and District guidelines.
  • Serves as liaison with appropriate personnel in VDOE and local school divisions.
  • Prepares a variety of program related reports in both manual and electronic formats (e.g. media communications, translations, guidelines, recommendations, curriculum components, state and federal reporting, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, conveying information and ensuring local, state, and federal program requirements are met in an effective and timely manner.
  • Actively participates in related local, State and national professional organizations.
  • Works with principals in the supervision of instruction of ESL teachers; provides support and in-services when needed.
  • Plans with other content coordinators and principals to establish and attain goals for the school system in concert with the Strategic Plan.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Master’s Degree and five (5) years of teaching experience. Certification in Administration and Supervision PreK-12-Central Office Only or Administration and Supervision PreK-12 required.
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of curriculum, instruction, assessment and adult learning theory.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of specialty area.
  • Knowledge and effective skills in textbook selection, curriculum development and budget development.
  • Must have the ability to analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Ability to guide and train teachers in effective instructional techniques and strategies.
  • Ability to develop and present ideas effectively, orally and in written form.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, teachers, staff and the general public.

Performs duties under the supervision of the Director for Curriculum and Instruction, Secondary Schools.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Working conditions include, but are not limited to, meeting frequent deadlines and attending meetings across the division and region. Highly diverse and complex duties. Must have high tolerance for change and the ability to work on several projects and assignments concurrently. Strong interpersonal skills required in working with diverse groups. Must have initiative and assume responsibility for working productively with minimal supervision. Must have the ability to sit for extended periods of time in a busy office environment; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds.
