Hotchkiss Brand is Hiring a Director of Athletic Performance and Fitness Near Lakeville, CT

Department: Athletic Department

FLSA: Exempt

Designation: Staff

Schedule: 10 months; Work flexible hours including weekends & holidays.

Reports to: Director of Athletics

Travel: Limited


POSITION SUMMARY:

Supervise all fitness areas in the Mars Athletic Center (MAC) and coach three seasons of the strength and conditioning program for two-sport varsity athletes. Help with coordination and oversight of the Exercise and Fitness Program for three terms, working closely with the faculty/staff supervisors to ensure proper protocols are being followed. Collaborate with the Athletics Director about overall strength and conditioning for all Hotchkiss athletes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

I. JOHN R. CHANDLER FITNESS CENTER SUPERVISOR (30%)

  • Supervise the fitness and weight room areas in the Mars Athletic Center.
  • Assist students with equipment use and set-up. Answer facility questions and provide general assistance.
  • Perform all duties pertaining to fitness and weight areas, including enforcing weight room and fitness area policies, providing assistance to students, and ensuring a safe and clean workout environment.
  • Visibly remain in the fitness and weight room areas during appropriate hours to answer questions and provide general assistance.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the fitness room and equipment. Keep a general log of such maintenance on a weekly basis. Report and restrict usage of broken equipment. Secure service contracts for machines. Make sure all services are performed on time.
  • Responsible for the overall appearance of the fitness areas and functionality of the spaces.
  • Refer all injury-related, nutrition, and eating disorder questions to health services and athletic training staff for evaluation and treatment.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Athletics, oversee performance and fitness budget.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

II. ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT COACHING ASSIGNMENTS (35%)

  • Coach three seasons of Strength and Conditioning Program for two-sport varsity athletes.
  • Implement a plan to supervise, instruct & evaluate student-athletes during these programs. Help develop protocols to instruct students on the basic points of strength and conditioning training using all training equipment provided.
  • Assist students in establishing and achieving individual goals over the course of the athletic season through supervision, direction and motivation. Administer basic evaluation/test at the end of the season, which typically lasts 10 weeks.

III. STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH TO VARSITY PROGRAMS (35%)

  • Work with coaches and/or teams on special strength and conditioning programs.
  • Provide conditioning models to be implemented during practice times.
  • Oversee the implementation of specific strength and/or conditioning testing to set team standards.
  • Provide in-season training for teams as requested by the head coach.
  • Work with athletic training staff to help administer recovery/rehabilitative sessions with direction from athletic trainers
  • Keep training logs for the Strength and Conditioning Program as well as for all varsity teams for future data-driven projects and analysis.

Skills and Experience

  • 5 years experience in coaching strength and conditioning, or an equivalent combination of education and experience as a strength and conditioning coach.
  • Experience programming strength and conditioning in a year-round athletic setting.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, and a demonstrated capacity to manage a complex function.
  • Ability to use data and information effectively in planning and decision-making.
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational and managerial skills.
  • Possess a high degree of energy and flexibility.
  • High level of diplomacy to manage interpersonal interactions.
  • Strong commitment to inclusion and cultural competency.
  • Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to task-switch effectively.
  • Ability, desire, and patience to work with adolescents.

Physical Demands

  • Close visual acuity to analyze data and figures and view a computer terminal.
  • Ability to sustain substantial movements of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects of up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, kneel and reach.
  • Ability to demonstrate the movements to the student-athletes that will be instructed.

Working Conditions

Operates in a variety of conditions, in a climate-controlled office and gymnasium, training rooms, and outdoor environments.
