Elementary Principal

Together with our community, South Lake Schools creates an environment that engages and nurtures learners while our staff connect with each other personally within our supportive, small school setting. South Lake Schools is located on Lake St. Clair in St. Clair Shores only 20 minutes from the diverse attractions of Detroit and 35 minutes from cider and doughnuts at one of many local apple orchards.

Job Summary:

The Elmwood Elementary principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school. They provide a clear vision for learning for all students; ensure a safe, secure, and orderly learning environment; and cultivate strong relationships with stakeholders, including students, families, and staff. They promote high-quality instructional practices, passionately enjoy working with children, and believe that all students can achieve. They must collect, analyze, and use multiple sources of data to guide continuous improvement in student achievement, manage school operations, and effectively evaluate and develop staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or higher, with coursework background in educational administration or leadership
  • A valid elementary Michigan teaching certificate AND valid Michigan administrator certificate
  • Five (5) years teaching experience in the field of education; previous administrative experience preferred
  • Such alternatives to the above as the Superintendent or designee may find appropriate

Performance Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead a school culture of accountability that establishes high social and academic expectations, creates an atmosphere conducive to good citizenship, and develops attitudes and patterns of socially acceptable behavior.
  • Develop, articulate, steward, and operationalize a clear vision for learning for all students and implement a strategic plan to accomplish that vision.
  • Clearly communicate learning and development goals that reflect high expectations for learning and growth, a belief that all students can learn, and a commitment to meet each student’s educational needs.
  • Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of South Lake Schools.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and orderly environment for students, staff, and the community.
  • Promote high-quality instructional practices that consistently allow for excellent instruction school wide.
  • Issue weekly informational updates of significance to teachers, students, and families on all areas of instruction as it relates to Elmwood Elementary.
  • Be visible and consistent throughout the school.
  • Ensure all assigned employees are aware of and follow all policies, rules, regulations, directives, and information issued by the Board of Education and Superintendent.
  • Develop systems and a school culture that promotes peer feedback, support, and collaboration.
  • Support the professional growth of staff members in a differentiated manner based on identified needs and individual goals.
  • Evaluate staff and provide teachers with timely and constructive feedback on classroom instruction to develop teacher practice.
  • Develop a culture of collegial and professional relationships among staff and students that promote critical reflection, shared accountability, and continuous improvement; develop positive and collaborative relationships with families.
  • Collect, analyze, and use multiple sources of data to guide continuous improvement in student achievement, student and staff well-being, and professional development for staff.
  • Manage the school budget, requisitions, and all school funds.
  • Establish plans and procedures for the care and protection of school property; oversee the upkeep of school facilities/physical plant; inform the Superintendent of the physical needs of the school.
  • Schedule building facilities to responsible community groups according to approved rental policies.
  • Provide proper prescribed measures for the care of injured and/or sick students and other personnel when at school.
  • Promote the establishment and/or maintenance of parent organizations in the school community and assume leadership within them.
  • Determine teaching load and assignment; assist with the recruitment, selection, and placement of teaching staff; deliberately build leadership capacity among staff.
  • Schedule, coordinate, direct and supervise the auxiliary instructional services.
  • Appraise and evaluate new instructional materials and equipment.
  • Implement procedures established for securing competent substitute teachers when regular teachers are absent.
  • Regularly attend and participate in after school events (building, district, and community).
  • Employees shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout their employment in the district.
  • Employees shall properly implement Board Policy 3122, Policy 4122, and Policy 2260 on non-discrimination and shall comply with Federal and State laws and regulations, particularly Part 1 104 of Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (34 CFR) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
  • Any other function(s) and/or duties deemed necessary by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment: 203 workdays

Base Salary Range: $103,259 - $111,198

ADA Requirements: Elementary school building environment, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, bending; extensive action with students, staff and parents, research incidents; first aid/CPR.
