Overview:
We are currently seeking dedicated individuals to join our team. We are looking for Police Recruits and Police Officers. As a team member you will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, protecting the community, and ensuring public safety. This is a challenging yet rewarding career that offers opportunities for professional growth and development.

Police Recruit- Any candidate who has no prior law enforcement experience are welcomed and encourage to apply. Must attend our police academy training facility. We pay you to train with health, dental and vision insurance. Must have a High School diploma or GED.

Police Officer Lateral- Any candidate who has an active OPOTA certification or letter of completion from Ohio's Attorney Generals Office is heavily encouraged to apply. Questions and Answers for Police Recruit

Q: Do I have to have police experience to become a police recruit?

A: No. The Dayton Police Department runs its own state certification academy. We pay you an hourly rate with benefits to train at our academy. Our academy is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, off evenings, weekends, and city-observed holidays. Recruits who successfully complete the academy certification requirements are promoted to full-time Dayton Police Officers upon graduating from the academy.

Q: Do I have to live at the academy?

A: No. Recruits train at the academy during the day and return to their own lives each evening and are off on weekends and city-observed holidays.

Q: Do I have to pay to attend the academy?

A: No. In fact, Dayton PD pays its Police Recruits as full-time employees, including benefits.

Q: Will I have to buy a lot of equipment?

A: No. We provide all weapons and most gear. We also provide the first three sets of winter and summer uniforms and give you a yearly uniform allowance.

Q: I have some issues in my background. Can I still become a Dayton Police Officer?

A: Most issues are handled on a case-by-case basis. If you have questions about a specific issue, speak to your assigned background investigator or the recruiter at 937-333-1024

Q: Does Dayton Police Department require a college degree?

A: No. The only requirement is a high school diploma or GED. Candidates who have degrees will receive a yearly bonus.

Q: Are tattoos allowed?

A: Yes, we allow tattoos except on the head, face and front of the neck.

Q: What are the age requirements?

A: Must be at least 20 years of age to apply. Our cut off age is 69 at this time.

Q: Are there any career advancement and how long does it take to achieve them?

A: Yes, we have a wide variety of career advancement from Sergeant, Lieutenant, Major, Assistant Chief, Chief. Also including specialized career advancement units such as: K-9, SWAT, Bomb Squad, Detective for homicide, narcotics, special victims, Traffic Service unit, Hostage Negotiation and much more. Only 3 years as patrol officer with Dayton to be eligible for specialized units and only 5 years as patrol officer to be eligible for rank of sergeant.
