Knife River Construction - Stockton is Hiring a General Superintendent (Heavy Civil) Near Stockton, CA

The General Superintendent position is responsible for multiple active job sites providing daily management and leadership to crew foreman and crew members, keeping all stakeholders involved in the progress of jobs and reinforcing a world class safety culture.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2-4 years in a post-secondary program with construction or engineering emphasis.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree in construction, engineering, business or related field.
  • 2 to 5 years' experience managing multiple construction crews.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Safety - In partnership with the Safety Director, implement and enforce safety policy and procedures. Complete USA’s prior to start of jobs and update through course of jobs as needed. Attend yearly CPR/Trench Safety/Confined Space training; monthly management safety meetings and tailgate safety meetings providing additional information or emphasis on topic focus. Trench design status, monitor and check with soils Engineer.
  • Planning: Research and analyze job plan and specifications on all assigned jobs to become the most knowledgeable about the construction components, labor and equipment needs, potential problems, hazards or safety concerns of the company’s assigned phase(s). Schedule and monitor resources during each phase. Coordinate with dispatching, trucking and other needs in the most cost-efficient manner. Coordinate with plant for current and future aggregate needs. Coordinate/order via purchase orders needed for aggregate materials. Understand quality parameters and procedures and schedule soils technician.
  • Project Management – Notify city/county prior to starting construction activity. Request and check job site staking prior to scheduling work crews for job. Coordinate and schedule on site disking and/or clearing. Locate jobsite water sources. Verify existing sewer storm inverts prior to starting underground work. Daily, check job site conditions to determine whether delay notification. Prepare 4 week “look ahead” in-house schedule on a weekly basis. Coordinate and schedule subcontractors. In partnership with assigned Estimator/Project Manager, evaluate changed conditions, schedule and cost impacts. Review and monitor small tool usage. Identify extra work and notify estimators and owners of same. Attend weekly jobsite meetings; request our business be addressed first so as to minimize conflict with internal meetings. Review foreman’s reports daily, discuss and follow through on any identified issues with assigned Project Manager/Estimator. Verify quantities of material are being accounted for and approved by owner when needed.
  • Leadership – Work with job “owner” to inform of progress, ability to complete phase of work efficiently and within timetables identified at bid. Work with trade superintendent to plan the trade’s phase of work, looking to maximize resources. Deliver plans and special instruction/conditions to Foreman for assigned jobs. Coordinate among peer Superintendents, the sharing of resources so all projects are run efficiently and are complete within timetable. Visit jobs daily; communicate with foreman on progress and planning for the next workday activities. Anticipate and revise daily plan as needed. Identify and recruit qualified workers. Understand union agreements and be liaison with union officials. Understand and promote development of workers.
  • Other – Strive to improve procedures and production continuously. Seize opportunities to perform work more efficiently. Champion KRC as employer of choice. Assist and provide information as needed on pre-bid work. Promote company and monitor market for potential work. Provide support to Construction Manager as directed/requested on tasks or special assignments.
  • Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong knowledge base of construction concepts, field application, staging of work and use of subcontractors.
  • Strong blueprint reading and analysis skills.
  • Strong communication skills including troubleshooting, conflict resolution and problem solving.
  • Advanced knowledge of engineering in a construction setting.
  • Strong resource planning, construction phasing and trade work coordination of assigned projects.
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Intermediate computer skills including exposure to estimating, scheduling and business software applications.
  • Ability to support world class safety culture.
