The city of Millbrae is a small suburban community situated in northern San Mateo County overlooking the San Francisco International Airport. MESD is a TK-8 district, operating five neighborhood schools: Green Hills Elementary, Lomita Park Elementary, Meadows Elementary, Spring Valley Elementary, and Taylor Middle School. All our schools have an active PTA/PTO supporting school-based programs. Our Millbrae Education Foundation (MEF) is a parent-led organization providing support for music, physical education and STEAM education for all five of our schools.

JOB DESCRIPTION
SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER, Moderate to Severe
DEFINITION
This professional provides educational services to students with moderate to severe physical, intellectual, emotional, social or communicative needs. Students receiving these services are also mainstreamed with general education classes or classes primarily composed of students with less severe disabilities. He or she consults with the classroom teacher to provide educational support to students who require modification of the core curriculum. The Special Education Teacher acts as a parent liaison in providing parents with materials and information. He/she introduces functional curriculum and community training, e.g. bus, food, campus orientation, transitions. The Special Education Teacher develops and uses individualized behavior management techniques individualized for each student in order to elicit appropriate behaviors. He/she supervised and assists with staff development of assigned personnel to aid in awareness and understanding of more severely disabled students.
DUTIIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and provide individual and small group specialized academic instruction for District students with disabilities.
2. Present activities that are developmentally appropriate for the students and are specially designed to conform with the student's IEP.
3. Provide identification, assessment and remediation to district students with special education needs.
4. Plan, develop and implement legally compliant IEP's.
5. Evaluate student academic and social growth; maintain appropriate records; prepare progress reports; communicate with parents/staff about student progress.
6. Observe and monitor children's behavior and development in their environment; develop and oversee implementation of behavior plans, as appropriate.
7. Plan and coordinate with regular education teachers to ensure classroom success for special education students.
8. Supervise and train paraprofessionals to work with special needs students within the classroom.
9. Provide necessary staff development at your site(s).
10. Provide training for parents to develop a partnership between student, school and home to ensure the success of the special needs student and to help parents understand the special needs of their children.
11. Assist parents to seek and coordinate other services in their community that may be provided to their children by various agencies, such as Regional Center.
12. Supervise students in and out of the classroom.
13. Attend staff meetings and participate in in-service education workshops provided by the school, the District, the SELPA, or other self-selected professional growth activities.
14. Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Learning differences and effective teaching methods to serve the needs of each student.
State and District curriculum requirements for all students.
Child development in psychomotor, social, cognitive, communication, vocational and self-help areas.
Competency in:
Behavior management and counseling techniques in working with both adults (parents) and students
Collaborative consultation; Laws, regulations and other compliance requirements ; Coordination functions; Staff development and inservice education; Skills related to parent education.
