JOB DEFINITION:

Under supervision, the Educational Assistant – Alternative Education performs a wide variety of instructional duties, which include the supervision and instruction of students. The employee will support regular classrooms during times of instruction and will supervise students during non-instructional activities. Detailed instructions are given at the beginning of work and on subsequent new assignments. However, after the employee becomes familiar with particular procedures, the work can be completed more independently. The Educational Assistant – Alternative Education works under the supervision of the Building Administration or a classroom teacher.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepares instructional materials using duplicating equipment, AV equipment, and resource materials.
  • Assists students in their understanding of instructional concepts by reemphasizing the basic elements of textbook or computer-directed activities with those students needing additional and repetitive assistance.
  • Corrects student work.
  • Keeps records and charts of student progress.
  • Supervises students both inside and outside of the classroom.
  • Contributes to student effectiveness by maintaining classroom discipline.
  • Supervises students during, lunch periods, and before / after school by keeping a calm and disciplined atmosphere, in the classroom, cafeteria, library, hallways, and bus lines.
  • Assists with filing, sorting, data collecting and organizing materials.
  • Assists in classroom areas, and library / media center in matters of routine clerical work.
  • Assists special programs staff in implementing IEP’s (Individualized Educational Plans).
  • Assists teaching staff responsible for preparation, implementation and evaluation of individual and group behavioral programs.
  • Assists in communicating with teachers and parents of students’ progress.
  • Provides students with additional practice on identified skill areas, both academically and behaviorally.
  • Follows the assigned schedule.
  • Fulfills other related duties as assigned.
  • Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.
  • Fulfills working conditions and physical effort listed below.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee works with small groups of students and on a one-to-one basis who may be physically or mentally disabled, learning disabled, emotionally disturbed, and/or demonstrates maladjusted behaviors. Supervision responsibilities require the employee to be able to stand for up to 30 consecutive minutes and move rapidly to intervene in situations where a student's safety is being jeopardized. The supervision may also occur during times of inclement weather. The employee needs to be able to lift / move / handle materials, boxes or equipment weighing up to 30 pounds and/or maneuver up to 50 pounds.

  • Audio-visual equipment and office machines and their operation.
  • Instructional materials and their uses.
  • Students’ behavior and methods to assure proper conduct.

  • Restorative and culture of care practices.

Skills & Abilities:

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Learn to operate telephones, computers, and other equipment used in the work, as required by the position.
  • Accurately transfer, record and convey information, and materials as required by the position.
  • Train and supervise student helpers.
  • Communicate clearly and appropriately in speech and in writing in accordance with educational standards.
  • Promote the success of special education programs and the students served by these programs.
  • Maintain patient, positive, persistent attitude and a warm, accepting personality.
  • Ability to learn how to deal with bodily fluid spills.
  • Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

At least two years of related college education, an AA degree, or meet the Highly Qualified requirements by passing the Paraprofessional Assessment Exam with a score of 455 or higher.

The position requires working knowledge of technical procedures or work activity areas and ability to teach them to others. Comprehensive knowledge of grammar and the ability to use correct speech and compose routine correspondence is required. The position requires the ability to understand technical instructions, including computers. Knowledge of work-related School District policies and practices is necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in six months to one year.
