Our District:

The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

 Our Community:

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains. Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar. Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

The Transportation Supervisor oversees the daily transportation functions; plans, directs, coordinates all functions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the district transportation department including personnel, equipment and facilities. Primary concern is providing a safe, efficient, economical transportation system for all eligible students between home and school on a regular schedule and other destinations as required by the students’ programs or school activities.

Essential Functions:

Depending upon the individual assignment, the Transportation Supervisor performs all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Supervises transportation department for the purpose of achieving outcomes in relation to organizational objectives, and ensuring conformance with legal, financial and District requirements.
  • Develops a student transportation program for the purpose of meeting all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.
  • Directs the implementation of existing and new programs/services (e.g. designing appropriate bus routes, bus schedules, bus driver safety standards, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring new programs/services are provided within established timeframes in conformance with all related requirements.
  • Compiles data from a wide variety of sources (e.g. investigating complaints, transportation budget/expenditures, payroll, etc.) for the purpose of analyzing issues, ensuring compliance with various policies and procedures and/or monitoring program components.
  • Understands collective bargaining agreement that pertains to employees in the transportation department and is mindful in complying with the agreement.
  • Establish and maintain a good public relations program designed to promote trust and understanding.
  • Maintain knowledge of federal, state and local laws regarding basic and special education.
  • Function as a team player, a positive motivator of colleagues and staff, and is self-motivated.
  • Facilitates meetings for the purpose of identifying appropriate actions, developing recommendations, supporting other staff, and serving as a District representative.
  • Monitors future equipment and personnel needs to ensure stated outcomes are achieved, relevant policies and procedures are met, and services are efficiently provided within budgetary guidelines.
  • Participates in meetings for the purpose of conveying and gathering information regarding a wide variety of subjects required to carry out the administrative responsibilities.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. maps, transportation budget input, route report, state reporting, etc.) to document activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, providing audit references, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions.
  • Researches a variety of information (e.g. new bus routes, bus schedules, new equipment/materials, bus policies, etc.) for the purpose of developing new programs/services, ensuring compliance with relevant requirements, securing general information for planning, taking appropriate actions, and/or responding to requests.
  • Responds to a variety of inquiries for the purpose of identifying relevant issues and recommending or implementing a plan of action that will efficiently resolve the issue.
  • Supports assigned administrators and collaborates with administrators in achievement of department, program and district goals.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to plan and schedule pupil transportation and vehicle fleet maintenance activities for greatest efficiency and service
  • Knowledge of proper English grammar, spelling, and usage in both oral and written communication

  • Ability to analyze, problem-solve and create effective action plans/response while remaining consistent and fair in addressing complaints and concerns
  • Ability to independently prioritize and appropriately manage multiple time sensitive tasks and effectively handle difficult and delicate people issues
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment and working knowledge of approved district software (i.e. Microsoft Office, PowerSchool)
  • Knowledge to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios
  • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include: all state and federal guidelines related to school transportation, personnel processes, pertinent policies, regulations and/or laws, budget management

Special Requirements:

  • High School Graduate
  • Extensive working knowledge of Versatrans Routing and Planning, Versatrans Onscreen, Versatrans E-Link and Versatrans MyGeotab
  • Knowledge of PBIS
  • Experience with labor relations administration with represented employees
  • Minimum of four (4) years responsible experience in public or private transportation, including two (2) years in a supervisory capacity
  • Degree in business administration or certification in CWU Pupil Transportation Management Training
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Clearance
  • I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act

LICENSES:

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with ‘S’ endorsement
  • School Bus Driver authorization (OSPI)
  • Certified State Driver’s Trainer
  • Optional: Qualified First Aid Instructor

Work Environment: 

The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee will work in an office area as well as in the transportation shop; is required to have precise control of fingers and hand movements; experiences constant interruptions and inflexible deadlines; must be able to work at a computer monitor; and must be able to crouch, crawl, bend, kneel, and lift/move objects such as files, boxes, etc. The employee is required to deal with distraught and/or angry parents and staff. The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed with some temperature extremes, some hazardous conditions and in varying atmospheric conditions.

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee’s Proclamation 21-14.2 requires all employees of Washington public school districts to be fully vaccinated as a condition of employment unless a documented medical or religious exemption is approved. Immigration Reform and Control Act Requirement:

In addition, a background check, based on fingerprints, will be requested from the Washington State Patrol.
