Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain is Hiring a Substitute Farmer Near Las Vegas, NV

Substitute Farmer

The Substitute Farmer is responsible for executing the School’s garden objectives as directed by the Sustainability and Garden Coordinator. This includes garden work outdoors in the 2,200 square foot Ruffin Organic Garden (ROG), as well as the 20-tree orchard and 9 grape vines around the circumference of the ROG.

The Substitute Farmer reports directly to the Sustainability and Garden Coordinator and in their absence reports to the (Director of Facilities). The Substitute Farmer will oversee the day-to-day duties in the Ruffin Organic Garden and will play a crucial role in supporting various aspects of garden operations, ensuring the smooth functioning of daily tasks, and contributing to the overall success of our garden. This individual works with a range of administrative colleagues, including the Director of Facilities and the Chief Academic Officer.

This is a part-time, 20 hr/week (4 hr/day) position beginning June 3, 2024 and ending on July 1, 2024. Hours are scheduled at the discretion of the Substitute Farmer in good faith and in accordance with weather conditions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Crop Maintenance:

  • Plant, cultivate, and harvest crops following established procedures and schedules.

  • Monitor and manage irrigation systems to ensure proper hydration for crops.

  • Implement pest control measures as needed in accordance with organic practices.

General Farm Duties:

  • Support in the organization and execution of seasonal activities, such as planting, harvesting, and processing.

    • This may include planting sweet potato slips

    • This will include hardening off seedlings

      • Day 1: 1-1/2 hour

      • Day 2: 3-4 hours

      • Day 3: 6-8 hours

      • Day 4: Overnight

      • Day 5: Plant in the ground and water through at base (do not wet leaves or they will cook)

    • This will include transplanting cucurbit crops into designated spots in accordance with the Farmer’s Almanac Plan. All cucurbits must be labeled when placed in the ground and watered through.

      • Special attention must be given the first week in the ground.

  • Assist with the distribution of garden products to the kitchen or donation centers.


  • Compliance and Record Keeping:

    • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations in all garden activities.

    • Maintain accurate records of crop yields and crop health

    • Maintain accurate records of crop, pest, and general care


Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in farming, agriculture, or related fields preferred.

  • Knowledge of basic farming practices, including crop rotation, soil management, and irrigation.

  • Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks in various weather conditions.

  • Strong work ethic, reliability, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

  • Good communication skills and ability to follow directions.

  • Must be able to pass background checks and drug tests prior to starting.


    • Priority is given to Applicants Who:

  • Have a strong sense of motivation, sustained attention to detail, and get-it-done attitude

  • Can work the full month of June.

  • Can lift up to 50lbs repeatedly, work bent over/squatting for half days outdoors in all weather.

  • Have experience in produce handling, and organic vegetable and fruit growing.
