Job SummaryPerforms intermediate-level technical or specialized work in the Parks and Recreation Department. Plans and implements recreational activities, programs, and events. Prepares promotional materials and assists with marketing needs of the department. Work is performed under limited supervision.
Essential Job Functions
  • Plans, organizes and implements specialized recreation activities, including but not limited to tournaments, fitness programs, after school programs, clinics, specialty camps, etc.
  • Supervises part time employees and volunteers as necessary.
  • Interacts and collaborates with a variety of groups and individuals including Town staff, community groups, volunteers, agencies/organizations, and the general public regarding recreation programs, activities, and events.
  • Coordinates with Town departments and officials to effectively communicate information about Town programs, activities, and events.
  • Assists Rollins Edwards Community Center Facility Manager with all functions related to operating the center including assisting with supervising the facility’s programs, events, and staff.
  • Assists the Marketing and Events Manager in managing Parks and Recreation social media accounts and coordinates with Town PIO to distribute social media information about Parks and Recreation programs, activities, and events.
  • Creates marketing materials including flyers, brochures and social media graphics to promote programs, activities, and events.
  • Purchases for programs, events and activities. Tracks expenditures, and prepares records and reports.
  • Ensures the safety of all programs, activity and event participants and providers by following Town and department policies and procedures and monitoring participants’ activities.
  • Responds to telephone and electronic inquiries regarding programs, activities, and events in a timely manner.
  • Operates a personal computer and other general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
  • Assists Marketing and Events Manager as needed with special events.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education And ExperienceAssociate’s degree in parks and recreation management, physical education or closely related field, and a minimum of one (1) year experience in parks and recreation or recreational programming; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must be computer literate, skilled with Microsoft Office products and possess the ability to learn software used by the Town. Must possess a valid SC driver’s license and a current CPR and First Aid certification. Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and policies of the Parks & Recreation department.
  • Knowledge of the laws, ordinances, standards, and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Knowledge of the principles of event planning/management.
  • Knowledge of the technical terminology used within the department.
  • Knowledge of proper English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and technology; skill in the use of computers for word and data processing.
  • Knowledge of how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals, and members of the public through contact and cooperation.
  • Knowledge of how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in organization, technical work, and human relations.
  • Skill in applying extreme attention to detail as necessary in preparing records, reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of the public and deal with the public in a professional manner.
  • Ability to offer assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required.
  • Ability to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency.
  • Ability to handle required mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to provide first aid within the scope of care.
  • Ability to read and interpret various materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job.
  • Ability to assemble and analyze information and make written reports and records in a concise, clear, and effective manner.
  • Ability to regularly attend work and arrive punctually for designated work schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Physical RequirementsTasks require the ability to exert moderate physical effort, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 50 pounds). Tasks will require some climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. Task may require you to spend prolonged amounts of time standing and/or walking or outside in direct sunlight.
