Student desiring activities of the guidance and counseling program; employees assigned to a counselor's office; maintains staff relationship with teachers.

JOB GOALS

To direct the measurement and evaluation program; obtain and interpret occupational and educational information for students; perform counseling service to students and teachers; conduct and report on research projects related to guidance and counseling.

To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and women.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Maintains cumulative records for students of the junior and senior high schools.
  1. Secures, organizes and interprets information in cumulative records to teachers and students.
  1. Performs individual and group guidance with students whenever services are needed.
  1. Maintains current information about higher education, special training in occupational fields; use these materials in individual conferences and in classroom group counseling.
  1. Study student personnel recorders for identification of individual conferences and in classroom group counseling.
  1. Work individually with students in aiding them to choose subjects from the curriculum for future vocational and educational purposes.
  1. Work with students, parents, industries, and places of business for placement of students in full and part time jobs.
  1. Make a partial follow-up study on students who withdraw or graduate from school.
  1. Interview new students and conduct orientation programs for them.
  1. Confer with and withdraw students who indicate their desire to drop out of school.
  1. Confer with teachers, parents, specialists, and community agencies on educational, health, social, and vocational problems of the student.
  1. Administer and score standard tests for all students of the junior and senior high school.
  1. Maintain and keep current and complete test profiles for each junior and senior high school student.
  1. Interprets the school program and student's individual program to parents.
  1. Attends parent-teacher conferences upon request.
  1. Confers with the building principal on ways of improving the counseling program.
  1. Acquaints students and their parents with college entrance requirements, and helps them to make a realistic comparison between the student's records and ability and the specific entrance requirements of the college in which the student is interested.
  1. Interviews each junior and senior regarding future educational plans, making referrals to the vocational counselor when appropriate.
  1. Aids students with all of the processes of college application, including application for financial aid where needed.
  1. Keeps an up-to-date library of catalogs, college profiles, scholarship information, testing information, and advanced placement materials.
  1. Maintains a supply of current application forms and information booklets for College Entrance Examination Board Tests and for the American College Testing Program.
  1. Maintains open communication and positive relationships with college admission officers, especially those representing schools in which the district student traditionally demonstrates the most interest.
  1. Arranges conferences with students for college admission officers who visit the high school.
  1. Obtains and disseminates information about financial aid programs for college entrants.
  1. Oversees the calculation of senior grade point averages and class rankings, and the processing transcripts.
  1. Prepares and supervises the processing of evaluations, recommendations, and other forms as required in connection with college applications.
  1. Attempts as much as possible to maintain a file of alumni, with their local addresses and the names of the colleges they attended together with their dates of graduation, for the purpose of arranging meetings between them and students interested in attending those colleges.
  1. Aids students in course and subject selection.
  1. Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students and to classes studying occupations.
  1. Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
  1. Works to discover and develop special abilities of students.
  1. Works to resolve students' educational handicaps.
  1. Registers students new to the school and orients them to school procedures and the school's varied opportunities for learning.
  1. Works to prevent students from dropping out of school.
  1. Helps students to evaluate career interests and choices.
  1. Remains readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  1. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment.
  1. Plans guidance field trips to schools, colleges, and industry for interested students.
  1. Guides students in their participation in school and community activities.
  1. Maintains students records and protects their confidentiality.
  1. Supervises the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  1. Makes recommendations to colleges for admissions and scholarships.
  1. Provides students with information relevant to colleges and potential employers according to provisions of the Board's policy on student records.
  1. Confers with parents whenever necessary.
  1. Assists in the orientation of new faculty members.
  1. Provides in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
  1. Works with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered by the student personnel services department, and to improve the education prospects of individual students being counseled.
  1. Advises administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline.
  1. Takes an active role in interpreting the school's objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
  1. Interprets the guidance programs to the community.
  1. Organizes and conducts annual "Career Day".
  1. Arranges for tutors and summer school work.
  1. Disseminates information regarding vocational education and career opportunities.
  1. Provides vocational guidance and information for students seeking a future other than college.
  1. Provides orientation of incoming high school students regarding vocational offerings.
  1. Remains up-to-date on changing job-entry skill requirements and changing technologies in business and industry.
  1. Informs local business and industry of vocational education programs in the schools, and seeks information regarding their job requirements.
  1. Meets with representatives of vocational school and the military services to discuss their programs and requirements and arrange meetings with students.
  1. Cooperates with businesses and industry on job references of former students.
  1. Arranges for business and industrial representative to interview graduates as prospective employees.
  1. Maintains a file of catalogs, school profiles, and scholarship aid information related to schools, colleges, and institutions offering post-secondary vocational training and education.
  1. Schedules the administration and individual interpretation of the general aptitude test.
  1. Provides a placement program for students completing vocational programs.
  1. Assists students wishing to make application to post-secondary vocational schools.
  1. Maintains adequate cumulative records on students in vocational classes.
  1. Assists in the individual vocational counseling of students.
  1. Assists other counselors in matters pertaining to job requirements, trade schools, and vocational opportunities.
  1. Gathers and publicizes information from the community regarding jobs available to all students.
  1. Interprets vocational educational to the community.
  1. Prepares follow-up studies of former students in vocational programs for the purpose of improving services and evaluating the effectiveness of vocational education.
  1. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the principal.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  1. This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 40 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 20 pounds. Other physical demands may be required.
