JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Curriculum & Educational Services assists the superintendent in overseeing and managing day-to-day operations of the instructional division of the organization in the areas of curriculum development and implementation, instructional practices, and assessments through the following actions:

  • Providing leadership and supervision of assigned staff.
  • Determining and addressing the needs of the district in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional staff development.
  • Providing leadership in the development, implementation and coordination of the district’s preK-12 instructional programs as well as communicating with residents of the district about these programs.

Essential Job Duties:

Works collaboratively with superintendent, Board of Education, principals, faculty, and community members, as appropriate, for the purpose of developing the philosophy, goals, and policies of the district’s instructional programs.

Provides leadership in the overall operations of instructional services for the purpose of identifying and addressing school, staff, and student needs as they relate to the development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum, instruction, and professional staff development activities.

Works collaboratively with administrators and faculty in organizing and coordinating appropriate professional development for the purpose of establishing horizontal and vertical continuity and articulation of the instructional programs and best practices throughout the district.

Demonstrates leadership in and supervises the development of curriculum documents and selection of textbooks and related materials for the purpose of ensuring that all district curriculum is approved by the Board of Education in accordance with state regulations and district needs.

Serves as district representative to various national, state, and local curriculum and instruction related associations and committees for the purpose of ensuring current practices are researched-based and compliant.

Demonstrates leadership in the preparation of applications for, and utilization of various grants for the purpose of enriching the curriculum and instruction within the district.

Develops proposals, innovative programs, budgets, and grant opportunities for the purpose of meeting identified district goals as well as state and federal mandates.

Oversees the collection of student-based data and timely reporting in state and federal cycles for the purpose of district compliance with state and federal improvement mandates.

Supervises grant and general fund account of instructional programs and all related financial activity for the purpose of ensuring that expenses are within budget limits and/or fiscal practices are followed.

Supervises elementary, middle, and high school buildings and personnel, as well as the Department of Student Support Services, for the purpose of delivering services which conform to established local, state, and federal guidelines while meeting the educational needs of the students.

Supervises and monitors student management systems (e.g., TIEnet, PowerSchool, BAA, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy and compliance with local, state, and federal pupil accounting guidelines.

Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.

Performs personnel functions (e.g., interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel, and achieving objectives within budget.

Provides ongoing and systematic professional development for administrators and staff for the purpose of program and pupil accounting compliance, increasing student achievement, and the needs of student placement and staffing allocations.

Researches a variety of information for the purpose of providing department leadership, implementing best practices, improving existing programs and/or developing innovative programs.

Provides leadership and guidance for the purpose of improving programs and curriculum for students and staff as well as state/federal compliance.

Interpret laws, regulations and policies of district, local, state, and federal agencies for the purpose of accountability and compliance.

Attends various meetings (e.g., Board meetings, county/tri-county director meetings, etc.) for the purpose of providing direction and/or receiving information.

Performs other related duties as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Skills, KNOWLEDGE, and Abilities


SKILLS
are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word, State website portals, and written/verbal communication skills.


KNOWLEDGE
is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include PowerSchool, TIEnet, Michigan Electronic Grant Systems (MEGS), I.D.E.A. regulations, AS400, etc.


ABILITY
is required to schedule a considerable number of activities, meetings, and/or events; routinely gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include professional leadership, communication, and conflict resolution.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS.

Responsibility.
Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; and tracking budget expenditures. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the organization’s services.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND/OR CERTIFICATION

  • Master’s Degree or higher
  • Michigan Administrative Certification and valid Teacher Certification.
  • Minimum of five years of classroom teaching and five years in public administration.
  • Experience in curriculum planning, implementation, evaluation, and successful supervisory experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may deem appropriate or acceptable.


EVALUATION
: Performance evaluated annually by the Superintendent.


Work Calendar
: July 1st through June 30th.


Salary
: Starting at $117,000 based on experience

: Benefits are comparable to the other Exempt Administrators and the Richmond Administrators Association (RAA) collective bargaining agreement
