Reports to: Principal

Location: Cardinal Mooney High School | Sarasota, FL

Classification: Salaried/Exempt

Overview

The School Counselor is a vital part of the Academic Services offered at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. Rooted in our Catholic faith and the school's mission, the counselor should provide a comprehensive guidance and counseling program designed to address the social, emotional, and educational needs of all students.

Job Responsibilities

  • Sustains and strengthens the mission of Cardinal Mooney and the philosophy of Catholic education.
  • Provide a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere for students using guidance services.
  • Acts as a liaison with the Assistant Principal of Curriculum to mediate conflicts between students and teachers.
  • Assists in scheduling and conducting parent-teacher conferences when necessary.
  • Provides additional academic progress reports as necessary per parent requests.
  • Meets with parents to aid in student concerns.
  • Provides outside resources for personal or academic counseling when appropriate.
  • Assists the College Advisor as it relates to students assigned to the counselor's alpha
  • Facilitate career interest inventories through Naviance
  • Create and present classroom guidance presentations to 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
  • Assists students in obtaining scholarship, grant and financial aid information.
  • Modify-if needed- course selection sheets, description guides, and appeal forms.
  • Attend workshops; including but not limited to: summer programs, internships, leadership, and college.
  • Write letters of recommendation.
  • Meets with students to schedule classes for the upcoming year and to review their progress in the four-year plan.
  • Monitors student scheduling, changes and grading.
  • Develop and conduct classroom presentations for students in consultation with other members of the guidance department.
  • Assists with the organization and administration of standardized tests.
  • Instructs students on standardized test procedures.
  • Review the results of standardized tests with students.
  • Attends professional development programs as warranted and required by school administration.
  • Prepares, conducts and assists with student and parent workshops on a variety of topics throughout the school year.
  • Monitors the progress of transfer students.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee
Requirements:
  • Master's Degree in School Guidance and Counseling (or equivalent), or willingness to pursue in a timely fashion.
  • Current certification in (or equivalent) in Florida, or willingness to pursue in a timely fashion.
  • Knowledge/experience with Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment and Honors Curriculum.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding organizational and leadership abilities.
  • Attention to detail and able to work independently
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with emphasis on meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively with School and Diocesan employees, department heads, representatives of other agencies, and the general public
  • Adherence to the Diocese of Venice Code of Conduct with emphasis on confidentiality
