Job SummaryThe Histology Technician performs routine and specialized laboratory procedures to support the production of microscopic slides for diagnostic purposes.
Northwest operates on a 24/7/365 basis; individuals may be required to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required.
Essential Job Duties
  • Demonstrates timelines and skill in appropriate paraffin embedding procedures.
  • Appropriately prepares paraffin block microtomy; demonstrates knowledge and skill of proper use of a microtome; follows cutting guides and ensures that tissue is mounted on the appropriately labeled slide.
  • Selects appropriate positive controls and demonstrates proficiency in performing Special Stains and the preparation of reagent and staining solutions.
  • Utilizes Laboratory Information System to generate work lists, and labels and to order tests as required.
  • Performs Quality control by documenting the results of positive and negative control results.
  • Gross small surgical specimens as needed.
  • Performs instrument maintenance and records temperatures.
  • Effectively provides job-related training to team members within the AP lab. Serve as team member resource to answer questions/problem-solve, and provide support and guidance to ensure individuals are able to complete tasks accurately, efficiently, and timely.
  • Supports in developing, standardizing, evaluating, and modifying procedures and techniques used in the Histology laboratory.
  • Organizes daily blocks for cutting and long-term storage.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, cleanliness, quality assurance, safety, and infection control
  • Assist others in completing tasks and work assignments.
  • Restocks supplies.
  • Participate in training and other learning opportunities to expand knowledge of company and position.
  • Attends and productively engages in designated team and/or department meetings, which may or may not occur outside of scheduled shifts.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution,
OR
Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination
  • HT or HTL (ASCP) certified, registry eligible, or relevant experience preferred
  • Active and valid US State-Issued Driver’s License Driver’s License with acceptable motor vehicle record as defined and approved by NWP-NWL vehicle insurance carrier.
Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of experience required:
  • Anatomic Pathology Laboratory
  • Proficient use of histology machines, tools, and maintenance.
  • Laboratory and/or healthcare environment experience is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
  • Ability to recognize and orient specimens appropriately; ensure proper staining of microscopic slides.
  • Understanding of arithmetic/algebra, basic anatomy, and chemistry.

  • This role routinely uses lab instruments/equipment as well as office equipment such as computers/keyboards/mice, printers, phones, mobile devices, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines, etc. The noise level in the work environment varies from moderate to loud.
Physical Requirements
  • Exerting up to 40 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; grasp and/or reach with hands and arms; repetitive movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close visual acuity and the ability to adjust focus to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; reading reports, various forms of charts or records, transcribing; viewing computer monitor(s); extensive reading; and legally operate a motor vehicle.
