JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for regulating, directing and controlling pedestrians at a designated school crossing while children are going to and from school.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Remains standing at the school crossing in full view of passing traffic for a specified period.
• Guides and directs pedestrians and school children through the designated intersection utilizing issued safety gear and hand motions to ensure pedestrian safety.
• Remains alert for possible safety concerns at school crossing.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

• Reports emergencies, equipment defects and traffic dangers.
• Records and reports license number of potentially dangerous vehicles.

QUALIFICATIONS

EXTERNAL and INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP and COMMUNICATION REQUISITE

• General public to include private citizens and businesses.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Must successfully pass a physical agility test and complete the required training for School Crossing Guards prior to the start of employment. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS

• Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
• Must obtain the Florida School Crossing Guard Certification. (If individual holds an Instructor Certification, it must be re-certified annually.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

• Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
• Must be able to handle the stress of working in a high traffic environment.
• Must be able to work with school age children.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed outside in potentially dangerous environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually high. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
