The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority is Hiring a Finance - Accounting Specialist Near Pittsburgh, PA

Under the general supervision of the Controller, the Accounting Specialist will work to enable and support department initiatives, offering a high level of detail-oriented services that enhance the external and internal customer experience. The incumbent will provide skilled research, possess strong communication and computer skills that improve the maintenance of department data, the collection of accounting records, and the completion of routine accounting transactions.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Compile requested financial reports, summaries and analyses as assigned
  • Facilitate departmental initiatives and projects
  • Lead and represent the department on specific projects
  • Maintain documents for the Finance department, including cataloging and filing
  • Participate in the annual physical inventory counts with Warehouse staff
  • Perform month-end and year-end closing activities
  • Perform data entry related to project accounting and payables
  • Participate in departmental initiatives and projects
  • Maintain confidentiality at all time
  • Meet divisional benchmarks within established guidelines
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned or required
  • Maintain the general ledger using an automated system to prepare and post adjusting journal entries
  • Perform monthly bank reconciliation, verify Authority deposits, and address various questions or problems with banking institutions
  • Perform accounts payable duties, such as reviewing and entering invoices for payment, ensuring expenditures are charged to appropriate accounts, that PO and invoice approval forms are accurate and processing vendor checks from an automated system
  • Monitor accounts receivable processes, including collections, deposits and related record keeping ensuring customer service postings are accurate
  • Participate in activity related to annual audits including fulfilling auditor requests and answering auditor questions
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Working knowledge of standard accounting procedures and principles including budgetary processes
  • An ability to establish and maintain complex financial records with automated systems
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work; follow established codes, policies, and guidelines
  • Perform work in accordance with safety regulations, guidelines, and practices
  • Work independently in absence of supervision; understand and carry out oral and written instructions
  • Communicate effectively, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with others encountered in the workplace
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including English usage, spelling, and grammar
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and works well with all personality types
Knowledge of computer equipment and software applications related to assignment, specifically Microsoft Office, and especially Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, experienced and proficient user of complex financial and accounting software
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
  • One year of experience in the areas of Finance and/or Accounting, experience with SAP preferred.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment. A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
Applicant must have permanent residency in Allegheny County at time of appointment and remain a permanent resident throughout employment with the PWSA. Verification of Allegheny County residence is required at time of filling application.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED / RECEIVED
No direct reports/ Will receive supervision from the Controller.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands consist of walking, climbing stairs, finger movements including fine dexterity and coordination, hearing conversation, seeing near and far, and speaking clearly. Frequently bending, stooping, repetitive leg and arm movements, lifting up to 25 lbs.
CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a moderate or quiet noise level in the office work environment.
Subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours or during emergency situations or other extensive periods.
MEDICAL EXAMINATION

DRUG TESTING
Employment may be contingent upon the results of a post-offer (initial employment or promotion) drug screening. Continued employment may be subject to drug, and alcohol testing conducted without advance notice and without individualized suspicion.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Ability to successfully pass a thorough investigation consisting of a criminal history check, verification of prior employment and performance, reference, and credentials checks, and in some cases credit history.
