Job Duties

Fresh graduates are welcome to apply for the Registered Nurse -I Ful-Time Position at Commonwealth Center for Children and Adolescents (CCCA) to provide age-specific nursing care to child and adolescent psychiatric patients in a safe, therapeutic environment using the least restrictive measures necessary. CCCA is seeking Registered Nurses for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shifts. Registered Nurses are scheduled to work (2) 12-hour shifts and (2) 8-hour shifts or (5) 8-hour shift per week and every other weekend.

CCCA is a 48-bed facility and is Virginia’s only public acute care psychiatric hospital for patients 17 and under. We are located in the heart of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley and conveniently located at the crossroads of I-64 and I-81. https://visitstaunton.com

Our mission is to provide high quality acute psychiatric evaluation, crisis stabilization, and intensive short-term treatment that empowers children and their families to make developmentally appropriate choices and that strengthens children’s hope, resilience, and self-esteem.

The role of the RN is to work closely with other members of a multidisciplinary treatment team to provide collaborative trauma-informed psychiatric care to their assigned patients, prioritizing care according to patient acuity, and managing changes in patient behavior and/or physical condition as part of the treatment team.

RNs utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, and document such care and patients’ response in accordance with policy and HIPAA regulations.

RNs are actively involved in admission, discharge, and transfer of patients, and provide patient and family education based on identified needs.

Responsibilities include supervising, supporting, and working collaboratively with Direct Care Staff.

Minimum Qualifications

- Knowledge of basic nursing standards and fundamentals.
- Current, Virginia license to practice as a Registered Nurse or license eligible; multi-state compact endorsement is accepted.
- Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care utilizing knowledge of pharmacology, psychiatric and physical disorders and cultural needs of the psychiatric patient.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited institution of higher education, work experience may substitute for education.
- Knowledge of lab values for children & adolescents required.
- Computer skills and knowledge of or experience with electronic health records are required.
