FIREFIGHTER-ADV EMT

Position Summary

The Firefighter-ADV EMT position performs specialized work in providing life-saving services (EMS) and the prevention and suppression of fires. ADV EMT duties include responding with ambulance service to emergency medical service calls and transporting sick and injured persons in the response area. Firefighting work includes combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, as well as, operating and maintaining fire department equipment and apparatus. Duties follow prescribed policies and procedures, but independent judgment may be required in certain circumstances.

While we always prefer that employees live within Lyon County, our residency policy has been amended. Employees are required to reside within Lyon county or the counties immediately surrounding. We work the Berkley shift schedule (24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 4 days off). There is no mandatory call back although a substantial amount of call back time is available.

Essential Functions

  • Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical and other emergency calls;
  • Makes forcible entry into buildings when necessary;
  • Assists in rescue operations involving vehicle accidents, structure fires and industrial accidents;
  • Drives and operates fire fighting apparatus, vehicles and equipment as qualified;
  • Correctly implements emergency medical procedures at the scene of an accident, emergency or fire;
  • Correctly applies emergency medical apparatus at the scene of an accident, emergency or fire;
  • Operates a variety of tools and equipment, including power saws, generators, hydraulic porta-power, ladders, etc.;
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire dept. equipment and facilities;
  • Completes appropriate records and reports;
  • Attends drills and classes for fire and emergency medical services;
  • Responds with an ambulance to medical calls and assists with emergency medical services;

Marginal Functions

  • Assists with fire inspections;
  • Performs general office duties.

This position may perform other duties deemed necessary as needed.

Firefighter-ADV EMT Position Requirements

Experience: The employee in this position is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after one year in the position.

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Certifications: Certification as Advanced Emergency Medical Technician

Must maintain all required certifications.

License: Requires a current and valid regular Class B Kansas driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, &Abilities:

  • thorough knowledge of EMS methods, procedures and technique.

  • ability to receive and interpret written and oral instructions
  • ability to operate all fire-fighting equipment and vehicles, rescue equipment, ambulance vehicles and equipment and apparatus and other department equipment

Problem-solving is a factor in this position. Problems include determining strategies for fire suppression methods to be used on EMS calls.

Decision Making: Decision making is a factor in this position. Decisions include the selection of proper methods and techniques for rescue and fire suppression activities. Decisions include determining

appropriate emergency treatments, administering medications and calculating doses.

Financial Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual department budget process.

Supervision: Overall supervision is provided and job-related decisions are reviewed by the company officer. This position does not have supervisory responsibility for subordinate personnel.

Personal

Relations:Frequent contact with city departments and the general public is to be expected.

Working Conditions: Physical effort is required. Extreme weather, blood-borne pathogens, toxic fumes and hazardous situations during fire fighting and emergency medical response are factors in this

position.

Physical Requirements:

  • requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry or push extremely heavy (200 pounds or more) objects and the ability to ascend and descend ladders using feet and legs and/or hands and arms
  • ability to work in high places maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling
  • requires the ability to successfully pass physical fitness tests
