LEAD Charter School is Hiring a Graduate Engagement Advocate Counselor Near Newark, NJ

About LEAD: New Jersey's first single sourced charter high school, designed to serve students ages 16-21 in grades 9-12 in Newark, NJ to master the essential skills crucial for success in career, postsecondary education, and community leadership. LEAD implements the YouthBuild Model, a guiding initiative under the Newark Opportunity Youth Network, (NOYN) which entails assurance of Graduate Success, Vocation skills, Rigorous and Relevant Education, comprehensive student support services and Leadership Development.

LEAD Charter School is committed to providing our students with a holistic approach through their transformative journey to become leaders within their own lives, their families and within their community. Through applied learning opportunities with partner organizations and corporations, LEAD prepares students to compete in the local economy and/or transition to postsecondary education.

JOB GOAL: To execute implementation of the Newark Opportunity Youth Network (NOYN) school model and support raising student achievement in preparation for success in postsecondary education, career, and community leadership across the school.

REPORTS TO: Manager of Graduate & Career Pathways

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in the nonprofit sector
  • Bachelor's degree in related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficiency in MS Office (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ect.)
  • Ability to work independently with initiative and judgment
  • Experience with enrollment, guidance, and student information
  • Ability to work with a diverse, multicultural staff and participants
  • Excellent oral and written communication
  • Excellent organization skills
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience student guidance is required
  • Technological Proficiency

RESPONSIBILITIES & PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:

  • Develop a comprehensive engagement plan to support a cohort of LEAD graduates during the school year (utilizing multiple tools and communication methods such as phone, email, social media, etc.)
  • Develop a written follow-up plan with individual graduates in college/career that identifies their needs/challenges and determines clear next steps to address/overcome barriers (such as assistance with job placement and advancement, connecting alumni to services/programs to address their unique personal needs, etc.)
  • Facilitate the course curriculum tailored to the needs of students, covering topics such as time management, goal setting, strategies for success and career development.
  • Assist current graduating students and alumni in exploring career options, developing job search strategies, and enhancing their professional skills. Coordinate career-related events, such as employer networking sessions and career fairs.
  • Track follow-up outcomes in our centralized data management system
  • Develop and execute strategies to connect with alumni through various channels, including email, social media, events, and networking opportunities. Cultivate relationships with alumni to promote ongoing engagement with the school and programs
  • Participate in weekly education team meetings, full-staff meetings, interdisciplinary team meetings, and other small group/special project meetings, as assigned.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to identify and address academic challenges facing graduating students. Provide referrals to tutoring, academic coaching, and other support services as needed.
  • Displays respect towards the rights and feelings of students, thereby encouraging students to develop attitudes of respect for the rights, feelings, opinions and property of others.
  • Displays a high level of effort and commitment to performing work; operates effectively within the organizational structure; demonstrates trustworthiness and responsible behavior.
  • Works toward professional growth and meets the role model standards of a youth development practitioner and educator.

A successful Graduate Engagement Advocate Counselor will produce the following outcomes by the end of the school year:

  • Comprehensive engagement plan/strategy developed to ensure each graduate receives a monthly touchpoint
  • Accurate and updated Individual development plans (IDPs) that ensure that student needs have been addressed and progress towards post secondary goals are indicated
  • Benchmark data on graduate retention in education, career and/or military
  • Publication of two (2) editions of a graduate newsletter
  • Updated database of graduate contact information and placements

Professional Development

  • Participates actively in all training and professional development sessions throughout the year.
  • Fulfill other network and program duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor.
  • Support growing postsecondary and career counseling initiatives.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

Full Time. Twelve-month employee. Salary based on experience and board approval.

EVALUATION

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board's policy on evaluation.
