The School Counselor assists and supports Villa Maria Academy students throughout their high school careers in the areas of academic achievement, personal and career development, and social/emotional maturity. The counselor collaborates with the faculty, staff, parents, administration, and external supports. As a member of the VMA community, the individual supports the mission and core values of Villa Maria Academy. 

Responsibilities

• Meet individually with each Freshman/Sophomore at least one time during the school year.
• Coordinate support services and/or action plans for students experiencing challenges in their academic, social, or personal lives. 
• Maintain memberships in relevant organizations. 
• Assist with Freshman orientation and facilitate activities that help create a sense of community for the VMA students. 
• Teach/co-facilitate Seminar curriculum to Freshman and/or Sophomore students; Introduce students to SCOIR with reference to creating a profile and the use of Interest/Aptitude inventories. 
• Coordinate and/or support special counseling- related programs
• Work closely and collaboratively with college counseling team. 
• Communicate necessary information to students, parents, and faculty in a clear, timely manner. 
• Work with Curriculum and Instruction Director, faculty, and students to support appropriate academic placement during the course selection process. 
• Maintain knowledge of the curricular and extracurricular programs 
• Communicate with physicians, therapeutic counselors, educational counselors, and school districts as required. 
• Coordinate special counseling-related programs.
• Write comprehensive and compelling letters of recommendation to support the student’s application to higher education, scholarships, and employment. 
• Meet weekly with Director of Counseling and attend monthly department meetings.

Qualifications

Education/Certification: Master’s degree in school counseling 

Valid PA counseling certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills 

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

Experience: Three (3) years teaching experience required at grades 9-12 Three (3) years counseling experience preferred
