Wild Leaven Bakery is Hiring an Assistant Baker Near Santa Fe, NM

With our team, you will gain valuable industry knowledge and the opportunity to create and build lasting relationships. Our base pay rate is $17 per hour weekly customer tips (hence $17-$20).

What will I do? Each person on the team is key to the operations of the business. As a part of our team members, you will work with ovens, mixers, slicers, and proofers to bake products that meet the highest quality, freshness, and safety standards. And the icing on the cake is, this is your opportunity to make a difference in our community. In this position, the hard working and friendly team member will provide some assistance to the management team.

Overall Work Schedule

  • 6:30 am the earliest start time
  • Daytime hours only
  • Extra hours during holiday and peak periods

This is an hourly, part-time position. In this position, the team member will be expected to work an average of 30 hours/week or 4 days/week. The team member will both play the role of baker and cashier and s/he will primarily provide some assistance with food-related tasks. We look to hire for personality and train on skills where needed.

All employees are required to conduct themselves in a professional manner such as following the Company's policies and procedures; showing up to work about five (5) minutes before their scheduled shifts. All employees are scheduled to work during the holidays.

In addition to doing that, applicants must answer all questions, skills tests and the one-way interview as part of their application. Incomplete applications will be rejected. Only applicants residing in the U.S. state of New Mexico will be considered.

Since we are a small team, we enjoy working with humble folks who are honest and appreciative of the work they do (in our case, providing food to our community), excellent people skills, exemplary work ethics and avid learner. You’ll need to be a decent and polite person too, someone we’d invite over for Thanksgiving dinner and would enjoy spending a meal together.

Other qualifications include:

  • Be 18 years old or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and industry experience
  • Must have a positive outlook about life, good attitude even while under pressure at work, a reliable work performance / ethic, easily get along with others and willing to follow directions without dragging one's feet.
  • Basic knowledge and interest in bread baking techniques and our family bakery
  • Applicants must have basic culinary, baking or relevant work experience in a commercial kitchen
  • State Food safety certification is highly welcome but not required. The company will pay for one that must be successfully completed by the set deadline.

Job responsibilities and duties

  • Open and close cash's registrar during our open business days
  • Smile, greet, and thank customers with a positive attitude
  • Clearly and positively take the customers' orders
  • Stand for long periods of time while checking out customers quickly and accurately
  • Keep all areas clean and presentable at all times
  • Prep and put back food items at the beginning and the end of shifts
  • Slice, bag, organize and pack wholesale orders of bread as needed
  • Ensure compliance with food health and safety regulations
  • Perform food quality control as needed
  • Maintain positive customer service with business partners and customers
  • Enforce sanitary practices for food handling, general cleanliness, and maintenance
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills
  • Strong math, problem-solving, decision-making skills
  • Be a good team player with positive attitude and excellent attention to detail
  • All employees must support each other as needed and upon request

Physical and Other Requirements

  • Must be available for all shifts
  • Must be able to keep a positive attitude while working under pressure work
  • Must have a reliable mean of transportation
  • Must be able to do basic trade math (i.e. margin calculations, shrink tracking, etc.)
  • Must be able to stand and lift at least 50 pounds occasionally
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel, squat, reach overhead and side to side during shifts
  • Must possess hand/finger dexterity
  • Must be able to safely maneuver around moving mechanical parts
  • Must be able to work in extreme cold and hot environments on an occasional basis
  • Must be able to work with extreme heat from ovens
  • Must be able to work extended hours and varying work schedule as dictated by the business
  • Must have some basic computer skills
  • Waiting period applies
  • State Food safety training & certification not required upon hire. The company will pay for one that must be successfully completed afterward

During their scheduled shifts, employees must wear comfortable closed shoes - no sandals or open shoes. Deodorants are welcome but the Company does not allow the use of perfumes.   • As already stated in this job description, Wild Leaven Bakery offers a non-negotiable base pay rate is $17/hour. In addition to this pay rate, employees receive variable weekly customers tips. Employees' promotion and pay raise are at the management's discretion. We offer paid sick leave that must be accumulated by employees based on their individual earned hours.
