Laboratory technician position available
CTEGD and Department of Infectious diseases, UGA, Athens, GA 30602
The laboratory of Dr. Alex Roseberg, located at the Coverdell Center for Biomedical Research, is looking for a laboratory technician.
The laboratory studies the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, an important intracellular parasite that infects >2 billion people worldwide. Most human infections are uncomplicated, but the parasite can persist, and the infection can be reactivated in immunosuppressed patients like those infected with
HIV. During pregnancy, infection causes congenital toxoplasmosis with serious consequences for the fetus. The recommended treatments against T. gondii are not ideal as they target only the acute stages with no effect on the chronic stages. In addition, treatment can cause allergic reactions and intolerance. In summary, there is compelling need for safe and effective treatments for toxoplasmosis.
The job involves general laboratory tasks like maintaining cells and parasite lines, organization of reagents and laboratory inventories, training and supervising undergraduate students, etc. In addition, this technician will be involved in ongoing research projects on innate immunity and host-pathogen interaction.
This position would be a great opportunity for those senior students interested in acquiring research experience in preparation for applying to graduate school or for a career in science.
Alex Rosenberg’s lab is part of the Center for Tropical and Emerging Global Diseases (CTEGD), a university-wide, interdisciplinary center that is home to approximately 24 labs that represent wide- ranging and comprehensive expertise in parasitology and tropical medicine and are among the largest groups of its kind in the world. Many of these programs have major international on-site components for both research and training. https://ctegd.uga.edu/
