We are now looking for a Chief Building Official to contribute to sustaining these ideals. POSITION PURPOSE
The Chief Building Official manages the Building Safety Division responsible for reviews and subsequent inspections of residential and commercial plans and construction to ensure compliance with adopted Building Codes and for the safety of building occupants. Performs technical building code review, fire code analysis, management and administrative duties related to the Building Safety Division under the general direction of the Development Services Director.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND ABILITIES
• Manages and supervises the Building Safety Division technical staff involved in the processing of development applications, plan checking, inspections, permitting and interpretation of the Building and Fire Codes and applicable rules and regulations.
• Performs Building Safety Division plan analysis.
• Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with superiors, subordinates, co-workers, developers, construction professionals, fire personnel and the public regarding building codes and enforcement.
• Maintains a thorough knowledge of applicable and current codes and regulations.
• Maintains complete and accurate records of building permits issued, inspections made and other compliance assurance activities. Prepares and presents staff reports to the Development Services Director as requested and Building Board of Appeals when necessary. Advises the organization on updating the Building Code. Assists in zoning compliance and engineering requirements. Provides fiscal budgetary support to the organization.
Principal Accountabilities:
• Balancing the Building Safety Division workload to ensure sufficient time and attention to the details of plan reviews, permit processing and on-site inspections.
• Assuring timely processing of building permit applications, plan analysis, inspection schedules, and tracking procedures.
• Exercising good judgment and excellent human relations skills by developing effective and harmonious relationships in order to gain voluntary compliance with building codes.
• Assuring a good inspection program by keeping complete and accurate records.
• Representing the Town regionally in Building Official meetings and Organizations.MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING OR EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent and seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressive practical/technical experience in the building trades or any combination of education and experience allowing the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position. A valid class D Arizona driver's license is required.
 
An undergraduate degree in engineering, construction technology or related field and Supervisory experience is preferred. In addition, the incumbent must possess, or be able to obtain certification within one year of employment, a Certified Building Official designation from the International Code Council (ICC). SUPERVISION – RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS
Supervises the Division Staff including but not limited to: Permit Technician, Building Inspector, Plan Reviewer and Facilities Maintenance Staff.
