The Clothes Rack is Hiring an Assistant Store Manager Near Richmond, VA

Introduction

The Junior League of Richmond is currently hiring an Assistant Store Manager to manage the daily operations of The Clothes Rack in Carytown. The Junior League of Richmond is an organization of women whose mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. The Junior League of Richmond (JLR) operates one store called the Clothes Rack that generates funds for JLR programs in our community and membership training. Sales are made possible entirely by the generous donations of clothing, household items, and furnishings from our members and the community at large. While our community programs funded by The Clothes Rack’s profits have been diverse over the years, the goal of the store has always been the same – to provide new and nearly new merchandise at affordable prices to the community.

Job Details

  • Reports To: Junior League President and Store Manager
  • Employment Type: Contract-to-Perm
  • Schedule: Full Time; 40 hours per week required. One Sunday per month is required. Must be available to work on-call shifts as needed.

Compensation: Base rate of $20 to $23 per hour

Benefits: If an employment offer is extended after the contract period, this position will be eligible for benefits.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two (2) years of retail management experience required. Prior experience in thrift stores is helpful.
  • Experience with volunteer management/coordination and brand and pricing exposure in retail operations preferred.
  • Must successfully demonstrate strong leadership and teamwork skill set, excellent time management and self-direction, superb interpersonal skills, and effective written and verbal communication.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, retail software, Google Drive and mainstream social media platforms.

Job Summary

The Assistant Store Manager manages the daily operations of The Clothes Rack and ensures that customers receive a wonderful shopping experience. A successful Assistant Store Manager acts as a second-in-command to the Store Manager by fulfilling the following expectations:

  • The salesfloor is stocked and visually appealing
  • Clothing and items are priced appropriately
  • Associates and key holders are coached to improve their merchandising and selling skills
  • The store team is working cohesively toward achieving financial goals and key metrics.

This position requires management of associates and volunteers, training associates and volunteers, marketing of the store and merchandise, managing The Clothes Rack’s social media accounts, and complying with established budgetary and operational guidelines. The Assistant Store Manager fosters a positive and professional workplace with a team-based approach through open communication. When the Store Manager is absent, the Assistant Store Manager is considered the manager-on-duty. During the Associate Store Manager’s shifts, they assign tasks to store associates, track their work hours, lead store operations, and facilitate store opening and closing tasks for the shift if applicable.

Job Duties

Clothes Rack Operations

  • Directs daily operations of the store in conjunction with the Store Manager
  • Provides optimal customer store experience through outstanding customer service, an attractive environment, high quality merchandise, and exceptional values
  • Ensures store is open for maximum hours of operation
  • Leads the coordination of all merchandise to include display, processing, pricing, and management of product waste stream.
  • Purchases store supplies in accordance with store budget
  • Provides support wherever necessary (customer service, ring register, process merchandise, cleaning)
  • Ensures bank deposits are made and maintains cash draw levels.
  • Directs team of associates by establishing performance expectations and providing coaching, counseling and feedback on an ongoing, timely basis.
  • Submits payroll records to Finance and Operations Manager bi-weekly.
  • Develops staff schedules to ensure efficient store operation and optimizing staff hours in accordance with budgetary guidelines.
  • Resolves staff issues as necessary and ensures proper and timely communication and resolution of challenges or issues in accordance with established policy and procedure.
  • Alerts the Store Manager and/or the Junior League President of any staff issues that need to be addressed.
  • Identifies featured items and trends in the retail markets on a weekly or monthly basis. Rotates stock regularly and organizes merchandise and/or displays to maximum sales.
  • Oversees store safety, cleanliness, and organization by ensuring adequate, safe and accurate labeling and storage of merchandise and equipment. Helps to maintain the physical condition of the store and grounds to protect investment and safety of customers and associates.
  • Notifies the Store Manager and/or the Junior League President of any maintenance or building repairs that may need attention.
  • Sets an example in customer service for associates by welcoming and responding to customers, donors, associates, volunteers and community partners in a courteous and helpful manner.
  • Monitors and reports problem customers and donors to the Store Manager and/or the Junior League President.

Volunteer Coordination

  • Ensures volunteers sign in and assigns tasks to volunteers during their shift.
  • Works with Junior League leaders to help volunteers receive proper credit for each shift.
  • Provides basic training to volunteers as appropriate.
  • Regularly attends relevant JLR meetings and communicates state of the store to the Board of Directors.

Sales and Profitability

  • Develops creative ways to enhance the experience of The Clothes Rack's customers patrons to the Store Manager.
  • Oversees and manages store budgets and monitors monthly expenses. Uses sound business judgement and data to meet and aim to exceed monthly, quarterly and yearly revenue budget goals.
  • Identifies opportunities to maximize sales and profits for continued growth, including pricing strategies, staffing, operations, and inventory control.
  • Creates and implements promotions and events to drive in-store and online transactions.
  • Maintains cash handling procedures and standards to record, balance, and deposit daily sales. Adheres to internal control standards.
  • Maintains a current understanding of the retail and resale environments to ensure The Clothes Rack merchandise represents a fair market value.
  • Identifies and researches quality merchandise to price competitively in the market.

Communications/Marketing

  • Develops and executes a retail communications and marketing plan in conjunction with the Store Manager and JLR leadership that is consistent with the League’s brand standards and messaging.
  • Manages The Clothes Rack’s social media accounts which includes posting regularly and frequently on behalf of the store, highlighting sales and promotions, and ensuring all posted information about The Clothes Rack is accurate, current, and consistent with brand messaging.
  • Monitors social media analytics to increase engagement within each platform and adjusts the marketing plan as needed.
  • Designs and sends weekly emails notifying customers of sales, featured items and store events.
  • Provides regular, effective media and advertising communications to promote and expand The Clothes Rack brand.
  • Researches and responds to customer and member inquiries as appropriate.

Community Outreach and Rolling Rack

  • Builds relationships with local auction companies and retailers to receive direct donations from leftover auction items and store closing inventory.
  • Develops and implements ideas to drive donations to The Clothes Rack
  • Collaborates with The Clothes Rack Committee to ensure the Rolling Rack can fulfill scheduled events.
  • Works with The Clothes Rack Committee and League staff and leadership to ensure the Rolling Rack is properly maintained.
  • Works with select Clothes Rack staff to schedule staff during Rolling Rack appearances.
  • Oversees and manages Rolling Rack budget and monitors expenses. Uses sound business judgement and data to meet and aim to exceed monthly, quarterly, and yearly revenue budget.
