The Children’s Advocacy Center for Child Abuse Assessment and Treatment

Job Title: Forensic Interview Specialist

Part-time: Up to 16 hours a week (Monday – Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm)

Salary rate: $28 - $30 an hour

This position is for our Main office in Covina and our Satellite office in Los Alamitos.

We ask that the candidate have a reliable means of transportation as there will be

required travel to each of these locations when scheduled.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Forensic Interview Specialist works in a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) setting to conduct neutral and developmentally appropriate forensic interviews of children who are alleged to be victims of sexual, physical, and/or emotional abuse or who have been witnesses to violent crimes. The Forensic Interview Specialist is also called upon to interview any person of any age with a developmental disability.

The Forensic Interview Specialist works under the direction of and reports to the Executive Director.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct forensic interviews with the above-mentioned populations.
  • Consult with Multi-Disciplinary Team members before, during and after interviews.
  • Utilize and update data tracking systems with accurate and timely information and documentation.
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning all information regarding victims and potential witnesses who are assisted at our agency.
  • Must be emotionally prepared to interact daily with child abuse victims and their families in a professionally compassionate manner.
  • Respond to subpoenas appropriately and as required.
  • Work with Victim Advocates, Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) and/or law enforcement to provide crisis intervention and resource information to children and their non-offending families.
  • Participate in and frequently lead monthly Case Review and forensic interview peer review.
  • Participate in local and state-wide meetings and attend training and conferences relevant to best practices in advocacy.
  • Collaborate effectively with law enforcement, social workers, prosecutors, medical staff, DCFS liaison, CAC staff and Executive Director.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to National Children's Alliance (NCA) best practice standards and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, counseling, psychology or criminal justice preferred but not required.
  • Experience in conducting forensic interviews preferred but not required.
  • Experience working with children and families who may have experienced trauma.
  • Knowledge of dynamics of child abuse, child trauma and child development.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to effectively communicate with and coordinate between diverse groups and individuals including MDT partners and primary and secondary victims/survivors.
  • Understanding of the criminal justice system, child protection services, and court processes.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong computer literacy skills.
  • Ability to accurately enter information into databases and spreadsheets.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Awareness of, and strategies for coping with, stress and/or vicarious trauma.
  • Must pass a Live Scan, as required by law, and other background checks.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with MDT partners, including law enforcement, child protection services, and prosecution agencies.
  • Experience with MDT approach to the investigation, intervention, and prosecution of child abuse cases.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in the area of child abuse, child protection, crime victim advocacy and services fields.
  • Experience providing crisis intervention and identifying, accessing, and coordinating community mental health and social service resources for children and families.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Mandarin.
