WANTED: INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE EXTRAORDINAIRE

We are looking for an awesome person who will provide one to one assistance during the 2024-2025 school year to a fabulous young man with Down Syndrome. Someone creative, who loves adventure and looks for ways to broaden the horizons of people with developmental disabilities. Someone who is kind and patient, and has a great sense of humor.

Who is your student?

He is a soon to be 21 year old man with Down Syndrome who is transitioning from high school to adult services. His parents are arranging private education services for his last year of transition, and need an awesome person (or a team of awesome people) to assist him in developing independent living and employment skills, support him with volunteer activities, and accompany him to educational classes and social activities to increase his community involvement. This young man has a great sense of humor, loves being a part of his community, is generally a very optimistic person, but hates vegetables.

Who will be his Instructional Aide Extraordinaire?

Our Instructional Aide Extraordinaire (IAE) must be a reliable individual who can be counted on to meet his/her time commitments and the agreed upon schedule for services. He/she must commit to provide services five hours per day for one to five days per week on a regular weekly schedule. The services to be provided will be agreed upon, however, they may include accompanying the student to volunteer activities, assisting him in learning to travel via the county bus system, transporting him to classes at the local community college or programs for developmentally disabled adults, and providing instruction and assistance with grocery shopping and cooking.

Our IAE must live in Tuolumne County or be willing to drive to Tuolumne County to provide the services needed. If you do not live near Tuolumne County (or even where it is or how to pronounce “Tuolumne”), then please, do not apply for this position.

Our IAE must have experience in working with individuals with developmental disabilities (experience with individuals with Down Syndrome is preferred but not required). He/she must be a flexible person, willing to change course or create a new plan when things go “off track.” He/she must be steady in moments of crisis, and not prone to stern instruction or strong language. (Our boy is a sensitive person, and will not do well with someone who is excitable or inflexible.) Our IAE must love teaching/coaching/mentoring, and excel at demonstrating how to do things by breaking tasks down and providing encouragement. Our IAE must be a fun and creative person, and must be able to laugh at the same joke many times over.

Our IAE must have completed at least two years of college level study, must have a valid driver’s license, a working vehicle and auto insurance.

Salary is commensurate with experience, mileage will be reimbursed at the IRS published rate.
