ABOUT US

Nestled in the Bowmanville neighborhood just 10 miles north of downtown Chicago, Rogers Park Montessori. School serves children ages 2-14. The students, teaching faculty, and parents of our two toddler classrooms, four 3-6 classrooms, four 6-9 classrooms, four 9-12 classrooms, and one Middle School classroom are a close-knit school community. We have a proud tradition of teacher collaboration and support.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Aftercare Coordinator is a guide who helps direct the children’s activities academically, emotionally, and physically in a prepared environment that challenges each child to reach their fullest potential. The Coordinator is responsible for upholding the purpose, standards, and policies of RPMS as outlined in the Parent and Employee Handbooks under the supervision and evaluation of the Principal and Educational Director.

The role of the Aftercare Coordinator is to support the children, utilizing best practices in Montessori pedagogy in a student-centered learning environment appropriate to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs of all learners. The Aftercare Coordinator oversees the afternoon enrichment programming; lunch and recess, nap (if appropriate), supervises the aftercare team, and facilitates communication within the classroom teaching teams. The Aftercare Coordinator works to order program lunch (if appropriate) or snacks, supplies, coordinate schedules, manage afternoon programming (if appropriate) and aftercare programs. The ideal person has strong organization and communication skills and values working as part of a dynamic, creative team.

Job Function:

The Aftercare Coordinator is an educator who supports students after the school day through age appropriate social and enrichment activities or programming. The Aftercare Coordinator is expected to conduct themselves in an ethical and professional manner at all times. The Aftercare Coordinator must maintain all personal information about children, families, organizational issues and other school matters as confidential.

Coordinator Essential Responsibilities:

  • Direct the children’s activities academically, emotionally, and physically in a prepared Montessori environment that challenges each child to reach their fullest potential.
  • Develop a positive rapport with children.
  • Oversee the safety and physical well-being of the children at all times.
  • Demonstrate realistic expectations of children based on age and abilities.
  • Protect the privacy and working atmosphere of the class at all times.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of extracurricular activities.
  • Train and supervise children in the execution of fire drills, including the routing and building exits and safety protocols..
  • Demonstrate a love of working with children, nurturing the whole child in developmentally appropriate ways.
  • Prepare an environment where furnishings and materials are complete and correspond to the needs of the group.
  • Oversee, care, and maintain classroom materials and yearly inventory.
  • Maintain an orderly environment, keeping it clean and sanitary, and in good aesthetic shape, allowing the children to share this responsibility when possible.
  • Maintain a written record of all parent meetings, phone calls and emails.
  • Maintain inventory, ordering spreadsheets, schedules, rosters and communications logs.
  • Maintain current attendance reports.
  • Report accidents immediately including preparing a written report and notifying parents.
  • Report all unusual or significant incidents immediately, including preparing a written report stating the date, time and nature of the incident, including action taken.
  • Provide on-going communication to parents as needed.
  • Proactively initiate discussions with parents in the early stages of issues.
  • Communicate and cooperate with the Administration on program changes.
  • Communicate effectively with children.
  • Communicate effectively with parents.
  • Communicate effectively with homeroom teachers.
  • Supervise and coordinate lunch and recess.
  • Supervise and coach the staff and promote their professional growth and development.
  • Provide guidance, training, and coaching to the assistants by meeting with and observing as necessary, conducting regular performance evaluations.
  • Assist in recruitment, interviewing, hiring selection, and training of program staff.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with all participants, parents, school staff and administration.
  • Work in collaboration with Aftercare Teacher Assistants to engage children in the school’s after school daycare program.
  • Work with children in both large and small groups as children play games, play in the gym/on the playground, cook, or complete art projects.
  • Responsible for remaining with the children until all aftercare students have been picked up for the day.
  • Assist the Principal and Educational Director in developing and implementing school policies and procedures, adult orientation, and educational design as requested.
  • Attend staff meetings and other school meetings as required.
  • Prepare annual goals, participate in peer consultations and self-evaluations, and consult with the Principal or Educational Director regarding professional growth and development.
  • Assist with other projects, programs, and planning as assigned.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures outlined in the Staff Handbook.
  • Adhere to AMS guidelines and professional standards.
  • Coordinate and create schedules for afternoon and daycare programming and staffing.
  • Creating any one off program wide emails or communications.
  • Communicate thoughtfully, respectfully, and clearly with parents and colleagues.
  • Demonstrate a love of working with children, nurturing the whole child in developmentally appropriate ways.
  • Organize program logistics, such as schedules, lesson plans, snack, space, supply requests, and other programmatic needs.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • B.A. Degree in related field.
  • 2 years of classroom experience.
  • Ability to fulfill requirements of all state and local licensing agencies affecting RPMS.
